Description:

The American English Coonhound or the Redtick Coonhound is a descendant of Irish and French blood, imported to America from the Old World. Settlers used them to hunt foxes in the daytime and raccoons at night. Initially, the Coonhound did not meet American standards for hunting breeds, because they could not pursue the game in the woods. Therefore, the original breed was crossed with the English Bloodhound, which enhanced the ability to track the raccoons by its smell. Currently, the American English Coonhound is used to track and hunt possums, deer, wild boar and bears.

Characteristics:

The American English Coonhound is a very athletic dog, perfectly obedient during the training. Coonhounds move with ease, they are hardy, vigorous and tenacious. Character:

The American English Coonhound is gentle, faithful and caring, however, it can be fearless and strong-willed. This dog breed is a very social and playful dog, so it needs constant human attention. It gets on well with the owners, children and other pets, especially if it grew up with them. The Redtick Coonhound is very sensitive, energetic and lively dog.

Coat / Care:

The American English Coonhound is covered with hard, rough and short hair. It is recommended to clean the Coonhound regularly and bathe the dog only if necessary. In addition, you should regularly check the dog’s ears and paws, in order to clean them from dirt.

Health Problems:

The American English Coonhound is prone to overheating (while on coon hunts during the summer) and hip dysplasia. The American English Coonhound dog has a life expectancy of 11 to 12 years.

Training:

The American English Coonhound requires training and socialization at the early age, and constant communication with the people is mandatory. It is useless to be too harsh or rigid, in fact, training should be based on fairness, consistency, patience and justice. This dog breed is a great working dog, well adapted to the field conditions.

Activity:

The American English Coonhound is very vivid, so it is not recommended to keep it in a city apartment. Coonhounds can be active only in the countryside and in the company of equally active host. If this dog spends too much time indoors, it becomes naughty, destructive and persistent at barking.
