BASSET HOUND DOG BREED

Description:

The Basset Hound is one of six recognized Basset breeds in France, bred for the purpose of tracking rabbits. These dogs are very attached to their master, they are kind and caring. Although the Basset is a natural hunter, it is not much of a watchdog, since it is exceptionally friendly breed. The most it can do is to alert the family that someone is coming. The Basset Hound has been an American icon since the 1950s.

Height: 12-15 inches  Weight: 20-65 pounds  Lifespan: 8-12 years

Characteristics:

The Basset Hound has a short stocky body, with short legs and big paws. Bassets have large pendulous ears, as a matter of fact, they hold the World record for longest dog ears. This breed, relative to size, is heavier-boned than any other breed. Comparable Breed: Beagle and Bloodhound.

Character:

Basset Hounds are gentle, devoted, quiet, dopey and quite drowsy. This is a great family dog that loves children and gets along well with other animals. The Basset Hound learns tricks easily, but since it`s stubborn and lazy, this process is pretty challenging and requires a lot of patience.

Coat / Care:

The Basset Hound is covered with short, dense and smooth hard coat that resists adverse weather conditions. Each strand of hair should be straight and strong in structure. Unfortunately, Bassets shed frequently, so grooming is demanding. You also need to periodically trim the claws on the feet and regularly clean skin folds.

Health Problems:

The Basset Hound is generally healthy dog, but like all breeds, they’re prone to bloating, spinal problems and may be susceptible to eye issues. The Basset Hound has a life expectancy of 8 to 12 years.

Training:

The Basset Hound is a very sensitive animal, so training should be carried out with maximum tenderness, understanding and patience. These dogs are so hard to train, as they are stubborn, willful and tend to intentionally disregard the owner.

Activity:

The Basset Hound is a sweet tooth and loves to overeat, so in order to be healthy, it needs considerable physical activity. This breed needs plenty of space. Large fenced yard is the ideal environment for Bassets.
