Description:

As the name implies, the Belgian Laekenois was designed in Belgium, where he was used for herding and protection of the flock. The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest of the four varieties of the Belgian sheepdogs. This breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club. The Belgian Laekenois was first recorded in the Foundation Stock Service in 1998.

Characteristics:

The Belgian Laekenois is a square-proportioned dog of medium size. This is a strong, hardy, agile and athletic dog. This breed is recognized by its long, rough and wooly coat. Laekenois is elegant in appearance, with an exceedingly proud posture. Comparable Breed: Belgian Malinois, German Shepherd.

Character:

The Belgian Laekenois is not suitable for dog breeders with no experience. It is extremely loyal, vigilant and protective. These dogs enjoy the companionship of a man, and if left alone for a long time, they can be quite damaging to the environment. The Laekenois usually gets attached to one person and has quite a good relationship with children. Although observant with strangers, the breed is affectionate and friendly with those he knows well.

Coat / Care:

The Belgian Laekenois is covered with coarse, a waterproof coat which comes in red, fawn or grayish tones. The head and the face are bordered by a long frill, and the tail is adorned with dense, bushy hair. The Laekenois coat requires regular brushing and occasional bathing, and their strong fast-growing nails should be trimmed regularly.

Health Problems:

The Belgian Laekenois is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, Eye Problems, Pannus, Cataracts, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Gastric (stomach) Carcinoma, Micropapilla, Hypothyroidism and Epilepsy. The Belgian Laekenois has a life expectancy of 10 to 14 years.

Weight / Height:

The male Belgian Laekenois dog breed’s height is around 18 – 20 inches and weighs around 45 and 70 pounds. Female Belgian Laekenois dogs can reach a size from 17 – 19 inches and weighs between 45 and 70 pounds. Male Dalmatians are generally larger than females.

Training:

The Belgian Laekenois requires early, intensive and long-term socialization and obedience training. This is a demanding and dominant dog, therefore rough or heavy-handed training methods are completely useless. Training methods should be based on firmness, fairness, patience, consistency and remuneration.

Activity:

This breed requires a lot of physical and mental stimulation. These dogs are not suited for a city apartment. The Belgian Laekenois feels great in the countryside where he can run and wander. These dogs are especially good in grazing, search and rescue, and they are used as bloodhounds, in police work and as sled dogs.
