Description:

It is difficult to determine the exact origin of Bernese Mountain Dogs. However, it is assumed that they first appeared on the farms in the Swiss Alps. This dog is one of four types of Swiss Mountain Dogs, and the only one with long hair. The Bernese Mountain Dog breed was officially established in 1907. In 1937, the American Kennel Club recognized it. This large, hardy and bulky dog was developed to herd cattle, pull carts, and be a watchdog and loyal companion. The Bernese Mountain Dog was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1937.

The Bernese Mountain Dog, or simply Bernie, is an impressive breed. This dog is strong, agile and highly intelligent. Polite behavior and undeniably striking appearance undoubtedly contributed to the growing popularity of this breed. In terms of stunning looks, talent and personality, very few breeds can surpass Bernie. Comparable Breed: Saint Bernard.

Character:

This breed is loyal and vigilant. However, these dogs are usually patient, good-natured and calm. Bernese Mountain Dogs are perfect companions for children, but since this is fairly large breed, they should never be left unmonitored. The Bernese is in need of constant communication with the man, and in the absence of social interaction, he can behave destructively. This dog is a good defender, but in the absence of obvious threat, he does not show aggression. The Bernese is suspicious of strangers, and he can even manifest shyness. Dogs of this breed are an important part of the family.

Coat / Care:

The Bernese Mountain Dog`s double, the tricolor coat is resistant to all atmospheric influences. The color is black with symmetrical markings of white and the hair is medium in length, straight or slightly wavy. The cotton cover is very dense, with active natural luster. Shedding is seasonal and quite significant. Bernese Dogs should be groomed regularly. It is recommended to bathe your dog periodically, using a dry shampoo.

Health Problems:

Although the Bernese Mountain Dog is a very robust and strong dog, he is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, oncological diseases and bloating. Due to the very thick and heavy coat, and also because of their size, these dogs may be susceptible to thermal shock. The Bernese Mountain Dog has a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

Weight / Height

The male Bernese Mountain Dog dog breed’s height is around 25 – 28 inches and weighs around 86 and 110 pounds. Female Bernese Mountain Dog dogs can reach a size from 23 – 26 inches and weighs between 80 and 110 pounds. Male dogs are generally larger than females.

Training:

The Bernese Mountain Dog should undergo early socialization and obedience training. Since the Bernese Mountain Dog is extremely sensitive, crude or heavy-handed methods can aggravate the training process. On the contrary, education should be based on love, respect, patience, consistency and even reward.

Activity:

The Bernese Mountain Dog needs a significant amount of exercise and constant interaction with the owner. They should spend at least half an hour working out or simply stroll. These dogs are not suitable for apartment living, they need a large, securely fenced yard, so they could run freely. Berners exhibiting basic herding instincts can be trained to compete in herding trials.
