Description:

The Bichpoo (also known as Poochon) is a designer breed, developed by crossing a Poodle and a Bichon Frise. Bichpoos became particularly popular through crossbreeding programs in Australia from the late 1990s. This is a family dog and makes a perfect companion. The Bichpoo is not recognized by the AKC, as it is considered to be a hybrid breed (designer breed).

Characteristics:

Ideally, the Bichpoo should be strong, well-built and sturdy. These small dogs have a proportional physique and a very pleasant personality. They are known to be quite affectionate and sensitive.

Character:

Gentle, energetic, and dedicated, the Bichpoo is an excellent friend and has a cheerful character. They get along very well with older children, and due to the non-conflictual nature, Bichpoos can bear dogs, cats and other pets. This dog can be somewhat friendly toward strangers, which may present problems if the dog is intended to act as a watchdog.

Coat / Care:

Bichpoos have a coat that is typically soft and curly, either white or apricot colored. The Bichpoo’s coat requires frequent cleaning to keep it looking its best and prevent tangling. A visit to professional groomer should take place every six to eight weeks. If necessary, you can bathe your pet, and it is especially important to clean its ears, to prevent infection. These dogs are prone to tooth loss, and therefore it is essential to monitor the hygiene of the oral cavity.

Health Problems:

The Bichpoo is generally healthy hybrid breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Epilepsy, Diabetes, Cataracts and all kinds of Skin Diseases. The Bichpoo has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Weight / Height

The male Bichpoo dog breed’s height is around 12 – 14 inches and weighs around 9 and 12 pounds. Female Bichpoo dogs can reach a size from 9 – 12 inches and weighs between 6 and 10 pounds.

Training:

The Bichpoo is highly intelligent and eager to please which makes him easy to train. Nevertheless, early socialization and obedience training are highly recommended. Rough or heavy-handed methods are completely useless. On the contrary, education should be based on love, respect and patience.

Activity:

Dogs of this breed are suited for apartment living. They require constant interaction with the owner, and because of their high energy level, Bichpoos need daily walks and regular playtime that will keep them physically active and mentally stimulated.
