Description:

The Black and Tan Coonhound was bred in the 18th century and is considered to be a purely American breed of dog. These dogs have an amazing flair and they show great talent in hunting raccoon, opossum, bear, boar and puma. Black and Tan Coonhounds can hunt in any weather and in any type of terrain. In 1945, this breed was officially registered by the Kennel Club of America among six other varieties within the Coonhounds family. The Black and Tan Coonhound can be used both for exhibition and work on the field.

Characteristics:

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a strong, big and hard-working dog. This breed is distinguished by a unique howl, which can be easily recognized by its master. Representatives of this breed have a strong constitution, and they possess great stamina and persistence. When it comes to a sense of smell, Black and Tan Coonhounds are considered to be one of the best in the canine world. Comparable Breed: The Bloodhound and Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

Character:

This breed is very intelligent, loyal, obedient and well adept at solving all kinds of problems. The Black and Tan Coonhound is extremely alert, eager and completely dedicated to his work. On the street, he behaves very friendly and good-natured. This dog can easily find a common language with older children in the family. As a rule, Black and Tan Coonhounds do well with other dog breeds, but they are not suitable for families that already have cats or other small pets. The Black and Tan Coonhound has a tendency to howl and bark excessively if left neglected for a long time. He is quite cold and reserved with strangers but usually does not show aggression.

Coat / Care:

The Black and Tan Coonhound has a short, smooth and quite dense coat. The coat color, as followed from the name of the breed, is black with tan markings on the muzzle, chest and legs. Puppies are born pure black and red marks appear after a few weeks. Representatives of this breed shed almost continuously. To make the hair loss minimal, Black and Tan Coonhounds should be cleaned with a stiff brush on a daily basis. If necessary, bathe your pet or cleaning it with a dry shampoo. Special attention should to this breed’s long ears. Hence, ears should be checked and cleaned regularly to prevent the development of infection. The Black and Tan Coonhound breed has a tendency to drool excessively, so they face should be cleaned as needed.

Health Problems:

The most characteristic diseases for Black and Tan Coonhounds are canine hip dysplasia, ear cancer, eye problems, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and hemophilia. The Black and Tan Coonhound has a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

Training:

This breed requires socialization and obedience training at a young age. The Black and Tan Coonhound thinks very independently, and he can sometimes show excessive stubbornness. Rough or heavy-handed training methods are useless, because Black and Tan Coonhounds are completely irresponsive to such approach. Training should be based on respect, firmness, fairness, patience and consistency. Coonhounds show special ability and talent for agility, tracking and hunting wild game.

Activity:

Very energetic and robust, the Black and Tan Coonhound needs active exercise and intense mental stimulation on every day basis. These dogs really enjoy long walks on a leash and are excellent companions for jogging or hiking trips. Keeping them in a city apartment is not an option. On the contrary, Black and Tan Coonhounds should be kept in a large house with a spacious yard. Moreover, this breed develops best in the countryside, where it can roam around and explore the surroundings.
