Description:

Originated in Louisiana, the southern region of the United States, Bluetick Coonhounds descended from the French and English Hounds. Bred to be hunters, dogs of this breed are used for hunting raccoon, opossum, bear and mountain lion. At the same time, the Bluetick Coonhounds is capable of working on any terrain and under any weather conditions. This breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in April 2009.

Characteristics:

The Bluetick Coonhound is a big, very muscular, strong dog. This breed successfully combines the agility, great endurance, kindness and self-confidence. Bluetick Coonhounds have a very keen sense of smell. In addition, they possess exceptional vision, which makes them excellent nocturnal hunters.

Character:

The Bluetick Coonhound is loyal to its master, it’s fearless and alert. Bluetick Coonhound is wonderful companions and excellent protectors. They can easily find a common language with older children, provided that they know how to behave. This dog is cold toward strangers, but usually not aggressive. The Bluetick Coonhound is good with other dogs within the same family, but he cannot tolerate cats and small pets. Dogs of this breed should not be left alone for a long time, as they can be quite damaging to the environment.

Coat / Care:

The Bluetick Coonhound is covered with dense, short and glossy hair, rather coarse in structure. Coloration is quite unusual. The main color is white, with frequent patches of dark hair, making it very colorful and blue in appearance. The head, chest and ears are mostly black, with tan markings over the eyes and on the cheeks. Shedding is almost continuous, so the Bluetick Coonhound needs regular cleaning, which will make the loss of dead hair minimal. If necessary, bathe your dog or simply clean him by using a dry shampoo. It is also necessary to regularly inspect and clean the dog’s ears, in order to prevent possible infection.

Health Problems:

The Bluetick Coonhound is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Cataracts, Hip Dysplasia and Krabbe disease. The Bluetick Coonhound has a life expectancy of 11 to 12 years.

Weight / Height

The male Bluetick Coonhound dog breed’s height is around 22 – 27 inches and weighs around 55 and 80 pounds. Female Bluetick Coonhound dogs can reach a size from 21 – 25 inches and weighs between 45 and 65 pounds.

Training:

Early socialization and course of general training are definitely mandatory. Rough or heavy-handed methods are completely useless and can only aggravate the learning process. As a matter of fact, training should be based on motivation, patience, firmness, fairness and consistency. Bluetick Coonhound has many talents, especially for hunting and tracking game.

Activity:

Bluetick Coonhounds require vigorous exercise on the everyday basis. They need constant communication with the man and a job to do. Dogs of this breed are not recommended for living in a city apartment. In fact, the Bluetick Coonhounds thrives in the countryside or in a house with a spacious and securely-fenced yard, where he can easily and safely wander.
