Description:

Originated in Portugal, the Cao De Castro Laboreiro is often referred to as the Portuguese Shepherd. These dogs were bred for herding cattle, protection of property, home and family. Unfortunately, nowadays, Cao De Castros are virtually unknown outside their homeland, they are extremely rare and very difficult to acquire.

Characteristics:

The Cao De Castro Laboreiro is a muscular, well-built animal of medium to large size. This breed is mentally very strong and has a striking appearance. Castros simply radiate fearlessness and arrogance. Comparable Breeds: The Mastiff and Bullmastiff.

Character:

The Cao De Castro Laboreiro is an intelligent, active and dominant dog that is not recommended for inexperienced or passive dog breeders. He is highly suspicious of strangers. Cao De Castro Laboreiros are very alert, always ready to defend their family, property and territory. Indeed, these dogs are formidable opponents. Cao De Castro Laboreiros show a lot of patience toward children within their own family, but do not tolerate other dogs or small pets. Cao De Castro Laboreiro is very loyal and trustworthy, which makes him a wonderful companions and great watchdog.

Coat / Care:

The Cao De Castro Laboreiro has a thick coat that perfectly protects him from adverse weather. It is smooth, dense and rough to the touch. Coat colors include black, chestnut and mahogany. In order to remove the excess hair, it is recommended to regularly clean and brush the dog, by using a stiff brush. Bathe your pet only when it is absolutely necessary.

Health Problems:

As this dog breed is still extremely rare, there is no specific data about health concerns. The Cao De Castro Laboreiro has a life expectancy of 11 to 13 years.

Weight / Height

The male Cao De Castro Laboreiro dog breeds height is around 22 – 24 inches and weighs around 65 and 75 pounds. Female Cao De Castro Laboreiro dogs can reach a size from 20 – 23 inches and weighs between 50 and 70 pounds.

Training:

The Cao De Castro Laboreiro is very smart by nature and will only tolerate orders of its owners. Therefore, the owner of the breed must be sufficiently experienced and rather dominant. Early and intense socialization and obedience training are vital for Castros. Make sure to avoid harsh or oppressive training methods. Indeed, education should be carried out on the basis of hardness, fairness and consistency.

Activity:

A dog of this breed is not suitable for keeping in a city apartment. On the contrary, the Cao De Castro Laboreiro needs a big house in the countryside and a job to do. This environment will help this breed to thrive and to stay in shape.
