Description

Carolina Dog is often called the American Dingo because is very similar to a small Dingo. It is believed that this breed exists for more than 8.000 years. However, this is not a completely domesticated canine. These dogs are not subjected to selective breeding, they are extremely rare and are almost impossible to acquire.

Characteristics

The Carolina Dog, like all the natural species, has a well-developed muscular system. This dog is strong and agile, very hardy, quick-witted and extremely vigilant. Comparable Breed: Basenji and Canaan Dog.

Character

It should be emphasized that this is one of the very few primitive dog breeds. Therefore, Carolina dogs are not recommended for dog breeders with no previous experience. This dog has the urge to be part of a pack and thus is suited for big families. This dog breed gets along well with children, provided that they grew up together. However, the Carolina cannot tolerate other dogs, cats or other pets.

Coat / Care

A distinctive feature of the Carolina Dog’s coat is its ability to change depending on the seasons. The winter coat is denser and fluffier than the summer coat. The hair is quite smooth and short on the ears, head and front legs. On the neck, shoulders and the back of the dog’s body, the hair is hard and long. Carolina Dogs must be occasionally cleaned with a stiff brush.

Health Problems

Since the Carolina Dogs are extremely rare and not engaged in the process of selective breeding, there is no specific information about characteristic health issues. The Carolina Dog has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Weight / Height

The male Carolina Dog breed’s height is around 20 – 24 inches and weighs around 35 and 44 pounds. Female Carolina Dogs can reach a size from 17 – 22 inches and weighs between 30 and 40 pounds.

Training

The Carolina Dog requires a leader who will dominate. It is of great importance to carry out prolonged and intense socialization at a young age in order to teach your dog obedience. Rough or heavy-handed training methods are absolutely ineffective. On the contrary, lessons should be based on respect, firmness, fairness, patience, consistency, and of course- reward.

Activity

Dogs of this breed should not be kept in a city apartment. The best environment for their growth is a rural location, where they will have plenty of space to wander and experiment. Please note that the fence must be very reliable so that the Carolina Dog could not dig out or over-jump it.
