Description:

The Pointer often called the English Pointer, is a medium to a large-sized breed of dog developed in England as a gun dog (bird dog). It is one of several pointing breeds. Bred in England in 1650, Pointers were brought to the United States, where the breed flourished in the abundant open hunting land. Nowadays, the English Pointer continues to be extremely popular hunting dog and a true friend to his master.

Characteristics:

The English Pointer is a dog with a proud and truly aristocratic behavior. Its whole appearance shows a constant readiness to work. The English Pointer is athletic, muscular and strong animal with graceful and flowing movements. Comparable Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer, Portuguese Pointer.

Character:

The English Pointer Affectionate is faithful and loyal breed, with calm and balanced nature. It is good with other dogs and gets along well with other pets, especially if they grew up in the same house. This dog is well behaved around the children, but, it is necessary to monitor its behavior. The English Pointer is quite cold with strangers and in a case of a suspicious noise or unexpected visitors, it quickly alerts the family.

Coat / Care:

English Pointers have smooth, dense and short hair with natural shine. It is recommended to clean it regularly using a bristle brush. Bathe your dog only in case of urgent need. Periodically check the ears and paw pads of your pet, to make sure that there is no accumulation of dirt.

Health Problems:

The English Pointers like any other breed, he is prone to several diseases. Hence, typical health issues seen in English Pointers include skin diseases, thyroid problems, hip dysplasia, and short stature. The English Pointer has a life expectancy of 12 to 17 years.

Weight / Height

The male English Pointer dog breed’s height is around 25 – 28 inches and weighs around 55 and 75 pounds. Female English Pointer dogs can reach a size from 23 – 26 inches and weighs between 45 and 65 pounds.

Training:

The English Pointer is very easily distracted from the learning process and is quite obstinate. However, it usually demonstrates remarkable ingenuity. It is necessary to conduct early socialization and obedience training. Lessons should be short and versatile. Do not use coarse or heavy-handed methods, thus the training should be based on firmness, fairness, patience, and consistency.

Activity:

The English Pointer is not suited breed for the city apartment. Natural habitat is a rural area or a farm, where it will have enough space for long walks. This dog breed is a very energetic dog that requires intense, daily exercise. English Pointers show their best qualities on the hunt, also, they are a great companion for jogging.
