Description:

This breed was developed by British breeders, through careful breeding of the English Cocker Spaniel. During the 19th century, the Field Spaniel almost went extinct. However, in the early 20th century, this dog breed was successfully restored and turned into an excellent hunting dog. Due to the extreme popularity of Springer and Cocker Spaniels, Field Spaniels are virtually unknown, particularly in the United States. 1894, the Field Spaniel was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club.

A well-balanced dog of medium size, the Field Spaniel is an embodiment of beauty and grace. These spaniels are both hunting dogs and companions. Hence, Field Spaniels are created to work on the land and on the water, regardless of the severity of field conditions. The Field Spaniel is a noble, proud and obedient dog, full of enthusiasm. Character:

The Field Spaniel is a breed with the best character within the spaniel family. These dogs have excellent manners, they are playful and quite intelligent. Although Field Spaniels are extremely friendly, they are very reserved with outsiders. They have an independent character and can also be overly stubborn. The Field Spaniel is great with children, provided that they know how to handle a dog. Furthermore, he gets along with other dog breeds and any other pet within the house. The Field Spaniel usually chooses one member of the family to be his master. Constant communication with humans is a must, in order to prevent this breed from becoming nervous and frustrated. Field Spaniels are very vigilant, and they are always ready to announce the arrival of strangers.

Coat / Care:

The Field Spaniel has a flat or slightly wavy coat, medium in length. The coat is shiny and silky, and since it has a quite thick structure, it perfectly protects the dog from inclement weather conditions. This breed is adorned with beautiful long locks on the chest, back of the legs and bottom of the body. Field Spaniels usually come in black. However, chestnut, auburn or red mahogany are admissible. Also, brown markings or freckles can be present. Clean and comb your pet at least twice a week. Furthermore, professional trimming is required once in every three months. Do not forget to regularly check and clean the long, delicate ears of your pet.

Health Problems:

This is a fairly healthy breed. However, like any other breed, Field Spaniels can be prone to certain health problems. The most characteristic diseases for this breed are hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, ear infections and several eye diseases. Keep in mind that this dog prefers cool climates. The Field Spaniel has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Weight / Height

The male Field Spaniel dog breed’s height is around 18 inches and weighs around 35 and 50 pounds. Female Field Spaniel dogs can reach a size around 17 inches and weighs between 35 and 50 pounds.

Training:

In order to prevent the development of timidity and aggression in these dogs, Field Spaniels require early socialization. Since this dog breed has an extremely sensitive and nervous nature, coarse or heavy-handed methods are simply unacceptable. Actually, Field Spaniels are responsive to firm, fair and consistent training. Also, love and respect are essential. The Field Spaniel needs a job to do, and he excels at hunting and agility.

Activity:

This highly energetic breed of dog is not suitable for people accustomed to lead a sedentary lifestyle. Although this dog breed shows moderate activity indoors, the Field Spaniel is not suitable for apartment living. Hence, these dogs thrive in a big house in the countryside. Field Spaniels have a tendency to run away, so the yard must be well enclosed. Swimming, ball games, jogging and hunting are this breed’s favorite.
