GLEN OF IMAAL TERRIER

Description:

Also known as Wicklow Terrier, the Glen of Imaal Terrier was bred in Ireland and can rarely be found outside his native country. Initially, this breed was developed as a multi-purpose hunter and was used to hunt fox and badger and rid the home of rodents. Glen Terriers were also used in organized dog fights. The Glen of Imaal Terrier was officially recognized by the American Kannel Club in 2004.

Characteristics:

Small in size, the Glen of Imaal Terrier is very agile and hardy breed. The phrase “large dog in a small body” perfectly describes this particular terrier. Indeed, this is an extremely stocky breed. The Glen is tireless and has a tenacious spirit. Comparable Breed: Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier.

Character:

The Glen Terrier is a loving companion and a skilled hunter. Do not buy this dog if you have small children. Also, these dogs do not get along too well with other dogs and small pets. Generally, the Glen of Imaal Terrier behaves quite calmly and in the case of danger, he will alert the whole family. Therefore, this dog is an excellent watchdog. Glens are very fond of communicating with humans but not too demanding in this respect. They are brave, stubborn and courageous, and yet calm and patient.

Coat / Care:

The Glen of Imaal Terriers has a quite rough, double-layered coat of medium length. The undercoat is soft and dense. Shedding is low to practically absent, so maintenance is easy. Twice a year, professional trimming is needed. The dog`s ears should be checked weekly for redness or a bad smell, which can indicate an infection.

Health Problems:

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is generally healthy but may be prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and a Degenerative Eye Disorder. The Glen of Imaal Terrier has a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years.

Weight / Height

The male Glen of Imaal Terrier dog breed’s height is around 18 – 20 inches and weighs around 45 and 70 pounds. Female Glen of Imaal Terrier dogs can reach a size from 17 – 19 inches and weighs between 45 and 70 pounds.

Training:

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is very clever and willing to learn. Though, this dog breed is quite proud and stubborn and therefore seeks to capture dominance. They are particularly sensitive to punishment so socialization and obedience training should be based on justice, respect and consistency.

Activity:

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is well suited for urban apartments and accommodation in the countryside. They enjoy a daily walk with their master but cannot be trusted without a leash. These dogs make excellent companions for road trips.
