The Norfolk Terrier, as the name implies, is a dog breed originally from Norfolk (a county in East of England). This attractive and sturdy dog is one of the smallest working terriers. Unlike other varieties of the family, the Norfolk Terrier is actually very affectionate, not characterized by stubbornness and aggressiveness. Norfolk Terriers are genetically very close to Norwegian Terriers from which they differ by their ‘drop ears’. The Norfolk Terrier was officially recognized by the AKC in 1979.

Character:

The Norfolk Terrier is always ready to play with children. He gets along well with other dogs and even cats. However, because of their keen hunting instincts, Norfolk Terriers tend to perceive smaller animals as the prey. In some cases, they may show jealousy. This dog breed is an attentive companion that loves to be in the limelight. The Norfolk Terrier can be stubborn, sometimes even nerve-wracking. He is a vigorous and diligent worker, full of enthusiasm. Norfolks are usually good watchdogs, they are alert and will bark to warn the family of unexpected visitors or any unusual sound.

Coat / Care:

Norfolk Terriers have a rather coarse, very ragged coat of wiry structure, which protects him from bad weather. The outer layer is quite short, close-fitting to the dog’s body. Beneath is a soft undercoat. Coloring can be red, wheaten, black and tan. Norfolk Terriers are small hypoallergenic dogs. The Norfolk Terrier does not shed, but he requires daily cleaning. Moreover, since the shedding is completely absent, Norfolk Terriers require professional trimming at least twice a year. This procedure will enhance the growth of new, healthy hair.

Health Problems:

The Norfolk Terrier is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to mitral valve disease, eye problems, hip dysplasia and patellar luxation. The Norfolk Terrier has a life expectancy of 12 to 16 years.

Weight / Height:

The male Norfolk Terrier dog breed’s height is around 9 – 10 inches and weighs around 11 and 12 pounds. Female Norfolk Terrier dogs can reach a size from 9 – 10 inches and weighs between 11 and 12 pounds.

Training:

The Norfolk Terrier is not very obedient when it comes to cleanliness, so it is advisable to keep your pet in a special box at first. As with any other terrier, the keys to the Norfolk’s successful upbringing is firmness, fairness and consistency. Norfolk Terriers are advanced and hardworking students, always eager to earn a reward. These dogs are very adept at learning and performing tricks and very successful at conformation shows.

Activity:

The Norfolk Terrier loves playing games and all sorts of adventure. This dog breed enjoys swimming, walking with the owner on a leash, and it will accompany you while jogging. If you keep your pet in a kennel, it will become frustrated and destructive. As a matter of fact, the Norfolk loves spending time with his family members in a large, well-fenced yard, or any other safe place. This breed is well suited for living in an apartment, provided that it gets enough opportunities for physical and mental work.
