Description:

The Peruvian Inca Orchid (PIO) is a very rare, ancient breed, which was bred in Peru in the early 1500s. This talented hunting dog was very appreciated by the Incas. Indians used bald representatives of the breed only as pets, while the coated were used for the purpose of hunting. In Peru, this breed is called ‘The Peruvian Hairless Dog’, and in Europe and the United States is referred to as ‘The Peruvian Inca Orchid’. The Peruvian Inca Orchid was first recorded by the Foundation Stock Service.

Characteristics:

Elegant, graceful and slender, the Peruvian Inca Orchid is a multi-talented dog breed. These dogs are calm, quick-witted, social, alert and lively. This dog breed you have in three sizes: small, medium and large. Comparable Breeds: The Xoloitzcuintli and Chinese Crested.

Character:

Peruvian Inca Orchids are not recommended dog breeders with insufficient experience. This dog breed gets on well with teenagers and dogs. However, the Peruvian Inca Orchid cannot find a common language with small pets. This is a faithful, gentle and loving dog, characterized by fragility and increased sensitivity. Peruvian Inca Orchids cannot bear too hot and extremely cold temperatures. These dogs have a very peaceful nature, however, they treat strangers suspicion. This is an intelligent and rather obedient breed, always happy to please its master wishes. The Peruvian Inca Orchid is a resilient, nimble and fast dog.

Coat / Care:

There are two kinds of the Peruvian Inca Orchid: bald and coated. Bald Incas have pink or dark skin, covered with short hair on the legs, head and tail. The other types of this breed can be covered in short, semi-long or long hair. Coated Peruvian Inca Orchid is a very low shedder, he will lose a negligible amount of hair. Both varieties do not have a specific doggie smell. Bald Peruvian Orchid needs special skin care, using special lotions. But, be sure not abuse the use of lotion, because it can lead to clogged pores and acne. Particular attention should be paid to the dog’s ears since the skin has a tendency to dry and crack. Coated Peruvian Inca Orchids should be cleaned and brushed periodically. Bathe bald and coated Incas should be bathed only when necessary, using a mild shampoo. Peruvian Inca Orchids are subject to early teeth loss.

Health Problems:

The Peruvian Inca Orchid is a generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to teeth and skin problems. The Peruvian Inca Orchid has a life expectancy of 11 to 12 years.

Weight / Height

The male Small Peruvian Inca Orchid dog breed’s height is around 10 – 16 inches and weighs around 9 and 18 pounds. Female  Small Peruvian Inca Orchid dogs can reach a size from 10 – 16 inches and weighs between 9 and 18 pounds.

The male Medium Peruvian Inca Orchid dog breed’s height is around 16 – 20 inches and weighs around 18 and 26 pounds. Female Medium Peruvian Inca Orchid dogs can reach a size from 16 – 20 inches and weighs between 18 and 26 pounds.

The male Large Peruvian Inca Orchid dog breed’s height is around 20 – 26 inches and weighs around 26 and 55 pounds. Female Large Peruvian Inca Orchid dogs can reach a size from 20 – 26 inches and weighs between 26 and 55 pounds.

Training:

Early socialization and obedience training is very important for proper development of this breed. The coach should be consistent, fair and respectful, as the Peruvian Inca Orchid does not tolerate too strict and rude handling. Peruvian Inca Orchid is very obedient, which makes them excellent students.

Activity:

The Peruvian Inca Orchid is suitable for living in a city apartment. If you keep your pet in a yard, make sure it’s well-fenced and shady. This dog does not need a lot of active exercises, short walks on a sturdy leash will be sufficient. Peruvian Inca Orchids love playing games with the family.
