Pomsky

Description

A Pomsky is a hybrid of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. In general, mixing consists of a male Pomeranian and a female Husky. These two breeds were crossed for the purpose of creating a small, cute dog, which should be suitable for living indoors. These ‘designer dogs’ come from America, where they became quite popular. Nonetheless, this beautiful breed is still not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Height: 10-15 inches  Weight: 20-30 pounds   Lifespan: 13 – 15 years

Characteristics

Currently, there are two types of this breed. Hence, there are those who are considered to be the first generation. Roughly, these dogs tend to inherit 50% of the genetic material of Huskies and 50% of the Spitz, and can weigh between 20 and 30 pounds. Representatives of the second generation, with 75% of the Pomeranian and 25% of the Husky, whose weight can vary between 15 and 20 pounds. Smaller varieties are more valued and are therefore much more expensive. This mixture of two Nordic dog breeds retains some of the characteristics of both parents. It resembles a small Siberian Husky, but it’s short-legged and rounder. Hence, the body structure is more similar to the Pomeranian. The head is similar to the Husky but smaller. Also, the snout is shorter. The color of the coat comes in a variety of colors, which is the distinctive trait of the Siberian Husky. Pomskies have blue eyes, just like Siberian Huskies (although they can also be brown). The tail is curved.

Character

Pomskies are full of energy, like Huskies and Pomeranians. However, this breed of dog is extremely obedient and always willing to please its master. Since he is friendly and very gentle, the Pomsky is a perfect pet, especially for small children. He usually inherits the best characteristics from both his parents. As its parent Pomeranian, this dog breed is cheerful and sociable. Hence, it loves people and enjoys being in the limelight. On the other hand, Pomskies are not very fond of strangers. Moreover, if not trained from the puppyhood, these dogs can become aggressive. Despite their small size, Pomskies will definitely oppose anyone who they see as a threat. Like Pomeranian, the Pomsky is highly protective of his family and territory, which makes him a great guard dog. Pomskies are very intelligent and learn with ease.

Health Problems

If we consider newly acquired experiences and typical health problems of their parents, it is believed that the Pomsky can suffer from dental plaque. This problem is inherited from Pomeranians. It is therefore very important to visit the vet at least once a year, in order to thoroughly clean the teeth. This will prevent a buildup of the plaque. Also, it is assumed that some puppies may inherit a tendency to heart disease, which is also a Pomeranian’s trait. The Pomsky has a life expectancy of 13 to 15 years.

Weight / Height

The male Pomsky designer dog’s height is around 13 – 15 inches and weighs around 25 and 30 pounds. Female Pomsky dogs can reach a size from 10 – 15 inches and weighs between 20 and 30 pounds.

Coat / Care

The Pomsky dog breed has a semi-long, dense coat, consisting of two layers. Even though the hair is not as the Pomeranian’s, it still needs to be brush very often in order to keep your dog groomed and healthy. Otherwise, your house will be filled with tiny hairs since Pomskies do have a tendency to lose a lot of hair. The fur is light and fluffy. The Pomsky can be of a single color (red, black, gray, cream, blue, brown…) or bicolor. The coat may also vary in length, density and texture. The hair is equally abundant throughout the entire body. This breed bears colder climate very well. Representatives of this breed blow their coats in the summer.

Training

In brief, the Pomsky’s behavior is closely related to the main characteristics of his parents. Hence, inherited traits are predominating. If you provide adequate care, training and socialization, this breed of dog makes an excellent companion. Pomskies are naturally very bright, and they respond well to reward-based training methods.

Activity

This hybrid dog needs to be given a minimum of 30 to 40 minutes of exercise a day. If deprived of exercise, the Pomsky can develop serious behavioral problems. Pomskies love to play around and be on the move, so they need an equally energetic owner.

Puppies

Pomsky puppies should be trained and socialized from very young age. So, make sure not to neglect your beloved pet, since the reputation of this young breed should be nurtured.
