The Poodle Standard gets very attached to its owner and may even suffer from a separation anxiety disorder. Poodle Standards are usually nice and quiet. Therefore, this breed is suitable for homes with other pets and children. Representatives of this breed are very distrustful with strangers, which makes them good guards. However, sometimes a Poodle Standard is prone to incessant, loud barking.

Coat / Care:

The Poodle Standard has a dense, stiff, curly coat. This breed comes in several colors, such as black, cream, gray, blue, white, apricot, red and brown. Also, the dog may have multicolored hair, but this color scheme is not standardized. Since Poodle Standards do not shed, they are rather easy to care. However, make sure to comb the dog on an everyday basis to prevent the hair from tangling. Professional trimming in every 6-8 weeks is required. For exhibitions, the Poodle Standard’s coat is cut in a special way, and the most popular types of cuts are called: Puppy Clip (for puppies), English Lion Clip and Continental Clip. Bathe your pet regularly, but make sure to use a mild shampoo. The Poodle’s teeth and ears require thorough care.

Health Problems:

The Poodle Standard breed is prone to cataracts, hip dysplasia, retinal disease, diabetes, epilepsy, allergies and heart disease. The Poodle Standard has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Training:

The Poodle Standard is easy to train, because this breed seeks to please the master’s wishes. This dog must undergo early socialization and obedience training. Since Poodle Standards do not respond to harsh training methods, the coach must be fair, patient, tenacious and should treat the dog with respect. Representatives of this breed excel at learning various tricks, and they are very successful in different dog sports.

Activity:

The Poodle Standard loves swimming, playing all sorts of games with the family, and it enjoys walking on a sturdy leash. Even though this breed is suitable for living in an apartment or townhouse, Poodle Standards thrive in the spacious yard, where they can run freely. Hence, these dogs need regular exercise in order to stay healthy and fit. Also, this will control the Poodle’s desire to bark.
