Description:

Presa Canario was bred by crossing, the now extinct, native Bardino Majero and imported English Mastiff. Presa Canario was created at the beginning of the XIX century, in the Canary Islands, specifically for dog fighting. After a total ban on this cruel kind of entertainment in the 40s, Presa Canario almost became extinct, nevertheless, he was restored through the efforts of the American anthropologist Dr. Carl Semencic, only 30 years later.

Presa Canario is a powerful dog with a big head and broad chest, which has an impressive, menacing look. Presa Canario is active and bold dog breed. This breed is known for its overly aggressive behavior towards strangers but submits to his owner without question.

Character:

Presa Canario needs a strong and determined owner, therefore, this breed is not recommended for breeders with no experience. This dog can become extremely dangerous if he falls into the wrong hands. However, a competent and experienced owner can make Presa Canario faithful and devoted friend. He is an excellent guard, very protective of its family and territory, immediately attacking everything that looks like a threat. This dog breed is not suitable for families that already have other pets.

Coat / Care:

Presa Canario has a very short, thick and rough coat with no undercoating. The coat is longer on the back legs and backbone than on the rest of the body. Molting is moderate. In order to remove dead hair, this dog breed needs regular cleaning with a firm bristle brush. Bathe this breed only when necessary, using dry shampoo.

Health Problems:

The Presa Canario dog breed can be susceptible to hip dysplasia. Other reported health issues include diseases caused by parasitic mites, very weak immune system and sensitive eyelid. The Presa Canario has a life expectancy of 9 to 11 years.

Weight / Height

The male Presa Canario dog breed’s height is around 21 – 25 inches and weighs around 80 and 100 pounds. Female Presa Canario dogs can reach a size from 21 – 24 inches and weighs between 80 and 95 pounds. Male dogs are generally larger than females.

Training:

Early, intensive socialization and obedience training are absolutely necessary for Presa Canario. The owner of this dog must be fair, consistent and tough and he has to set clear limits for his pet. Mutual respect between the dog and the owner is of key importance.

Activity:

Presa Canario doesn’t like to live in a city apartment, he needs a vacation home with a site or a large fenced yard. This breed needs daily exercise. During an appearance in public places, this dog breed must be muzzled and on a strict leash.
