Characteristics:

The most distinctive feature of this breed is its elongated muzzle. The Pumi is a hardy and very brave dog, which really loves to bark. This feature makes this dog breed an excellent watchman. Besides, Pumis are great family pets. Comparable Breeds: The Mudi and Puli.

Character:

The Pumi is affectionate and optimistic. When it comes to strangers, this breed is distrustful and somewhat timid. However, it does very well with teenagers. Strong-willed, intelligent and energetic, the Pumi can sometimes be overly aggressive. He needs a job to do and does not tolerate loneliness and boredom. Pumis are rather independent and, furthermore, can be hectic and too noisy.

Coat / Care:

The Pumi has a thick, stiff, curly hair of medium length. The undercoat is soft, but not silky. This breed sheds minimally, and it only changes the undercoat. Nonetheless, Pumis should be groomed every day. Make sure to bathe your dog only in case of necessity. Every three months, this dog breed must undergo a professional grooming procedure, during which excess hair from the dog’s ears should be removed.

Health Problems:

Pumis are very rare animals and since human intervention in their development was minimal, they are characterized by excellent health. The Pumi has a life expectancy of 12 to 13 years.

Weight / Height

The male Pumi dog breed’s height is around 16 – 18.5 inches and weighs around 27 and 29 pounds. Female Pumi dogs can reach a size from 15 – 17.5 inches and weighs between 22 and 24 pounds.

Training:

The Pumi is intelligent and learns with ease. However, his stubbornness may aggravate the training process. For this reason, early socialization and obedience training are very important for Pumis. Education needs to be rigorous, fair and consistent.

Activity:

Because Pumis are hyperactive and noisy, they are not suitable for living in an apartment or townhouse. This dog breed belongs on a farm, where it can graze livestock. The Pumi adores all sorts of games and likes to go hiking with the owner. However, during the jogging, he should be kept on a secure leash.
