Description:

The Pyrenean Mastiff is a Spanish breed, originally from Aragonese and Navarrese Pyrenees. This breed was created to protect livestock from large predators, such as wolves and bears. This breed almost went extinct in the early 20th century, especially after the Spanish Civil War, but was successfully restored. Today, Pyrenean Mastiffs are still very rare.

The Pyrenean Mastiff has a dense coat, tight to the skin. The hair is longer on the neck, shoulders, abdomen and legs, compared to other parts of the body. Pyrenean Mastiffs should be brushed and combed regularly, but make sure not to bathe them too often. Particular attention should be paid to dog’s claws, ears and teeth.

Health Problems:

The Pyrenean Mastiff is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to various eye diseases, bowel inflammation, hip dysplasia and blisters. The Pyrenean Mastiff has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

The male Pyrenean Mastiff dog breed’s height is around 29 – 30 inches and weighs around 200 and 220 pounds. Female Pyrenean Mastiff dogs can reach a size from 28 – 29 inches and weighs between 175 and 200 pounds. Male dogs are generally larger than females.

Training:

The Pyrenean Mastiff is very smart and strictly follows the commands of the owner. In general, this dog breed is always happy to please every family member. The Pyrenean Mastiff will not respond to overly rigid teaching methods. In fact, the coach should be strict, yet fair.

Activity:

The Pyrenean Mastiff cannot bear living in the city. Actually, this massive dog needs a vacation home with a large plot, where he can frolic in the wild. For proper development mental and physical development, Pyrenean Mastiffs need a job to do. These lovely animals enjoy outdoor activities, such as swimming and hiking.
