ROTTWEILER DOG BREED

Description:

The exact origin of the Rottweiler is uncertain. It is believed that Rottweilers descended from the Italian Mastiff though. In the Middle Ages, the Rottweiler was widely used as a herding dog, but by the beginning of the 19th century, this breed almost went extinct. Only a hundred years later, this breed was restored thanks to the German breeders. Nowadays, the Rottweiler is used for hunting, search and rescue, protection and in police force. As a matter of fact, Rottweilers are considered to be one of the best guardians.

Height: 22-27 inches  Weight: 77-130 pounds  Lifespan: 8-10 years

Characteristic:

The Rottweiler is a medium-large, robust dog. This dog is powerful, even striking in his appearance but cheerful and loving. However, Rottweilers can be threatening, even overly aggressive when protecting their family and territory. For this particular reason, these dogs require socialization and training at very young age. The Rottweiler is notorious and many consider him evil and cruel, but he is extremely loyal and devoted to his family. Comparable Breed: Doberman Pinscher and Mastiff.

Character:

Rottweilers are gentle and affectionate, and they get along well with children. However, due to the large size of the dog, it should not be left alone with the kids. If properly educated, this breed easily finds a common language with other dogs, but due to his strong protective instinct, the Rottweiler is hostile towards strangers.

Coat / Care:

The coat is short, straight and thick, rough to the touch. The undercoat is found mainly on the neck and thighs. The Rottweiler`s coat should not be wavy or curly. This breed has a blue-black top and cramped-red (rusty) bottom. Shedding is moderate, so grooming is not too demanding. It is enough to periodically remove the excess hair with a firm brush. Bathe your dog as needed, in order not to disturb protective properties of the hair.

Health Problems:

The Rottweiler is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dyplasia, Aortic Stenosis/Sub-aortic Stenosis (AS/SAS), Osteosarcoma, Panosteitis (Pano), Hypothyroidism, Allergies and Gastric Dilatation-volvulus (GDV), also called Bloat or Torsion. The Rottweiler has a life expectancy of 8 to 10 years.

Weight / Height

The male Rottweiler dog breed’s height is around 24 – 27 inches and weighs around 110 and 130 pounds. Female Rottweiler dogs can reach a size from 22 – 25 inches and weighs between 77 and 110 pounds. Male dogs are generally larger than females.

Training:

This dog strives to be the best at everything. The Rottweiler is very clever which facilitates the learning process and helps him to be successful in various sports competitions. Hence, Rottweilers can be overly self-willed, so they need a strict and determined coach. This breed is distinguished by sturdy physique and mental strength which requires mandatory obedience training at an early age.

Activity:

Rottweilers need a large yard for extensive physical exertion. This helps them thrive and stay healthy. Exercises should be allocated to two hours a day. The Rottweiler loves long walks, swimming and running next to a bicycle.
