Description:

Allegedly, the Samoyed took the name from the population of Samoyeds settled in northwestern Siberia. Then, the selection of these extraordinary Nordic animals continued mainly in England. This breed was traditionally used to hunt, herd and haul sleds for the Siberian Samoyed people. The Samoyed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1906.

Characteristics:

The Samoyed is a very kind, friendly and cute dog, which does not leave anyone indifferent. Samoyeds are peaceful but fairly active dogs. This breed is infinitely devoted to its master and is also quite friendly with other people. Samoyeds are very sociable animals, which makes them perfect family companions. In addition, these dogs look very beautiful. Comparable Breed:  The Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute.

Character:

The Samoyed barks little but is always ready warn the family about a possible threat. This breed is not suitable for homes with small and passive animals, but Samoyeds do very well with cats, other dog breeds and small children. This is one of the most responsive of the Spitz family.

Coat / Care:

The Samoyed has a long, two-layered coat that requires constant care. The outer layer is longer and more rigid than the undercoat, but it’s still quite soft. The undercoat is short, thick and very soft. Samoyeds shed profusely during the shedding season, so they require frequent combing. The coat of this dog gets dirty easily, but it is also easily cleaned. Moreover, regular bathing is desirable.

Health Problems:

The Samoyed is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Samoyed Hereditary Ghlomerulopathy, Glaucoma, Cancer, Hip Dysplasia, Hypothyroidism, Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). The Samoyed has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Weight / Height:

The male Samoyed dog breed’s height is around 21 – 23.5 inches and weighs around 45 and 65 pounds. Female Samoyed dogs can reach a size from 19 – 21 inches and weighs between 35 and 50 pounds. Male dogs are generally larger than females.

Training:

Samoyeds are quite stubborn, willful and easily distracted. So, in order to keep the dog focused, education should be consistent, strict and diversified. This bright breed responds well to positive reinforcement techniques and is suitable for almost everyone. Keep in mind that the Samoyed is not suited to be a guard dog.

Activity:

This dog breed prefers low temperatures, but it can bear living in warmer climates. The Samoyed needs active exercise and mental work. Since this dog breed quickly becomes overheated, this breed needs constant access to drinking water, especially during exercising.
