The Scottish Deerhound is very friendly and affectionate breed. Sometimes, this dog may look menacing, but he has a truly nice character. Although often referred to as the Scottish Greyhound Gentleman, this dog can be quite capricious, and he is not as easy to train as it seems. This breed is not recommended for families who already have other pets. The Scottish Deerhound was first recognized by the AKC in 1886.

Height: 28-32 inches  Weight: 75-110 pounds  Lifespan: 8-11 years

Characteristics:

Quiet, loyal and faithful, the Scottish Deerhound is very friendly toward everyone he meets. This is a bold but friendly dog, who gets along well with children. Scottish Deerhounds are quite slow in understanding new information. Nevertheless, these dogs are very tenacious, so the teacher must be patient. This will ensure success. Comparable Breed: Borzoi, Irish Wolfhound.

Character:

The Scottish Deerhound is a large dog with a posture of true dignity. However, this gentle giant gets along well with children, even with the youngest, and can therefore be an excellent companion. Still, the Deerhound can hardly tolerate the presence of small animals. For this reason, the Scottish Deerhound needs to be socialized at very young age.

Coat / Care:

The Deerhound has a rough and tough coat. Thin and coarse hair should fit tightly on the dog’s body, giving it a shaggy, disheveled appearance. This breed does not require frequent maintenance since it sheds moderately. However, the Scottish Deerhound occasionally requires professional trimming and grooming. Deerhounds have a tendency to bloating. Since this dog has a very sensitive stomach, it is recommended to give him 2 to 3 small meals per day, rather than one big portion. Also, make sure to avoid intense postprandial exercising.

Health Problems:

The Scottish Deerhound is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Hypothyroidism, Gastric Torsion (Bloat), Allergies, Factor VII Deficiency, Anesthesia Sensitivity, Dilated Cardiomyopathy, Cystinuria, and Osteosarcoma. The Scottish Deerhound has a life expectancy of 8 to 11 years.

The male Scottish Deerhound dog breed’s height is around 30 – 32 inches and weighs around 85 and 110 pounds. Female Scottish Deerhound dogs can reach a size from 28 – 31 inches and weighs between 75 and 95 pounds.

Scottish Deerhounds are slow students. They get easily socialized, but it is quite difficult to teach them basic obedience rules. It is recommended to start training your dog as soon as possible.
