Description:

The Sealyham Terrier was bred in the middle of the 19th century in Wales. This breed was created specifically to hunt rodents, so it is very brave and flexible. Sealyham Terriers are quite popular in Europe but still uncommon in the United States. This is a calm and obedient terrier.

Characteristics:

This charming little dog has a muscular and strong physique. Although the Sealyham Terrier is bold and highly energetic, he is calm and well-balanced. This breed is loyal to his family, which makes it a great companion dog. Comparable Breeds: The Dandie Dinmont Terrier and West Highland White Terrier.

Character:

Sealyham Terriers are intelligent and affectionate. They are independent and extremely temperamental, more than all terriers. However, the Sealyham Terrier is less irritable than other members of the group. This dog gets along well with teenagers and does not show aggression toward familiar dogs. But, Sealyhams clearly do not like strangers. The Sealyham Terrier is a good watchdog and real member of the family.

Coat / Care:

Sealyham Terriers have a double, weather-resistant coat of medium length. The outer layer is rough and wiry, while the undercoat is soft and dense. These terriers come in white color. However, they may have a lemon, tan or badger markings on the head and ears. The Sealyham Terrier sheds minimally. Nonetheless, this breed needs to be brushed at least twice a week to prevent the hair from forming mats and tangles. Also, professional trimming is required. Bathing is not recommended. This dog is very tolerant of cold weather but does not like the heat.

Health Problems:

The Sealyham Terrier is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Lens Luxation, Von Willebrand’s disease, Allergic (to fleas) and craniomandibular osteopathy are very common in these dogs. The Sealyham Terrier has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Weight / Height

The male Sealyham Terrier dog breed’s height is around 10 – 11 inches and weighs around 22 and 24 pounds. Female Sealyham Terrier dogs can reach a size from 10 – 11 inches and weighs between 20 and 22 pounds.

Training:

The Sealyham Terrier is rather hard to train. Hence, this dog quickly acquires new knowledge but may try to undermine the power of the host. For this reason, Sealyham needs early socialization and obedience training. Also, this breed needs a strict teacher who will impose the rules. This breed is very successfully in various canine sports.

Activity:

The Sealyham Terrier requires moderate exercise. He loves spending time with the family. These dogs are perfectly suited for life in a city apartment, but they will feel great in a country house. The Sealyham Terrier cannot be trusted, so make sure to keep him on a leash while hiking.
