Sussex Spaniel

SUSSEX SPANIEL DOG BREED

Description:

The Sussex Spaniel is a gentle, clever and even-tempered dog. He was bred in Sussex, England for the purpose of tracking, hunting and retrieving. This breed loves to interact with people and is very attached to his master. The Sussex Spaniel was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1884.

Height: 13-15 inches  Weight: 35-45 lbs.  Lifespan: 12-15 years

Characteristics:

The Sussex does not get along with unfamiliar dog breeds, but if you carry out early socialization and training, he will not behave aggressively. On the other hand, this dog is a wonderful companion and communicates well with cats and other small animals. Comparable Breeds: The English Springer Spaniel and Clumber Spaniel.

Character:

The Sussex Spaniel does not like to be bothered, so he is not suited to live in the house where there are small children. Nonetheless, this breed will have no problems with teenagers. Sussex Spaniels are somewhat lazy but can be good guards. Hence, these dogs will bark to warn the family of possible danger. This dog should not be left at home alone with unfamiliar small animals because it has a very strong hunting instinct.

Coat / Care:

Sussex Spaniels have a dark, wavy coat of medium length. They come in the golden liver. The Sussex Spaniel is a moderate shedder, so he needs regular combing and brushing. Since the Sussex is prone to ear infections, his ears need to be cleaned regularly and thoroughly. It is also recommended to periodically carry out professional grooming.

Health Problems:

The Sussex Spaniel is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Pulmonic Stenosis, Patent Ductus Arteriosis (PDA), Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) and Hip Dysplasia. The Sussex Spaniel has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Weight / Height

The male Sussex Spaniel dog breed’s height is around 13 – 15 inches and weighs around 35 and 45 pounds. Female Sussex Spaniel dogs can reach a size from 13 – 15 inches and weighs between 35 and 45 pounds.

Training:

Sussex Spaniels were bred specifically for small game hunting, but they can also take part in various sports competitions. However, since the Sussex Spaniel is lazy and can be overly capricious and naughty, the coach must be strict and very persistent.

Activity:

The Sussex Spaniel is an indoors breed, but he needs daily exercising to stay healthy and fit. Most of all, this breed loves to swim, hike and seek game.
