American Pit Bull Terrier

AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER

Description:

Bread in the 19th century, the American Pit Bull Terrier was developed by crossing Old English Terriers and Old English Bulldogs. In the early 20th century, Pit Bulls were used as catch dogs in America for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt, and drive livestock, and as family companions. Some have been selectively bred for their fighting prowess. The breed is banned in the United Kingdom, in the Canadian province of Ontario and in many locations in the United States.

Characteristics:

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a strong, muscular dog of medium size. Pit Bull Terriers are considered to be excellent fighters, as this breed shows force, courage, agility and, at the same time, grace. The American Pit Bull Terrier is extremely gentle to those whom they love. Comparable Breeds: The Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Bull Terrier.

Character:

Dogs of this breed are extremely loyal, absolutely devoted, affectionate, intelligent and good-natured. The American Pit Bull Terrier, along with older members of the family, can look after the children. It gets along with dogs from the same household but shows aggression toward unfamiliar dogs and other small pets. This dog will do anything to protect its family, it home and it’s territory. Still, the American Pit Bull Terrier is very good-natured and cannot be regarded as a good watchdog. Aggression to people is not a typical feature of the breed. American Pit Bull Terriers are not recommended for beginners or people who lead a sedentary life.

Coat / Care:

The American Pit Bull Terrier is covered with short, thick, glossy and stiff hair. The color can be very diverse, including a combination of colors or color patterns. The coat falls to the average intensity. Regular grooming with a stiff brush is minimizing hair loss. If required, the dog should be bathed or cleaned using a dry shampoo.

Health Problems

The American Pit Bull Terrier is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to hereditary cataracts, hip dysplasia, congenital heart disease and allergies to various plants. These dogs prefer warmer climates. The American Pit Bull Terrier has a life expectancy of 12 to 16 years.

Weight / Height

The male American Pit Bull Terrier dog breed’s height is around 18 – 19 inches and weighs around 30 and 85 pounds. Female American Pit Bull Terrier dogs can reach a size from 17 – 18 inches and weighs between 30 and 70 pounds. Male dogs are generally larger than females.

Training:

The American Pit Bull Terrier is very obedient and strives to guess the desire of the owner. It is extremely important to conduct intensive and extensive socialization and training at very early age. In education, do not use coarse or rigid methods. Thus, training should combine respect, firmness, fairness, patience and consistency. The American Pit Bull Terrier is an obedient, prompt and conscientious dog.

Activity:

Dogs of this breed get real pleasure from exercise. The American Pit Bull Terrier enjoys socializing with a man and is ready to participate in any game. In the presence of active walking and good physical exercise, a dog of this breed can bear a city apartment. American Pit Bull Terriers excel in many dog sports, including weight pulling, dog agility, flyball, lure coursing and advanced obedience competition.
