Bedbug sniffing dogs

Bedbug sniffing dogs

Bedbugs are tiny insects that feed on human blood. They hide in dark places close to where humans sleep and usually crawl out to feed while people are fast asleep. Bedbugs can be a problem in the cleanest of homes. It’s easy to bring bedbugs home. They can crawl into luggage, clothing, and even furniture, unnoticed. Once inside your home, bedbugs will find a hiding place. Favorite hiding places include a mattress, box spring, headboard, couch, tiny cracks, and crevices, behind headboards, within closets, and underneath carpeting. Although bed bugs can thrive in almost any type of building, hotels and motels are particularly vulnerable.

Getting rid of bedbugs can be a difficult sense that you can’t notice bedbug with your eye or smell.

Dogs have been used very effectively for the detection of bed bugs.

The industry of detection has experienced a recent expansion within the last decade, which is largely due to the increase in reported infestations. Expansion continues to rise in heavily populated cities, such as New York City, due to the insect’s developed resistances to certain pesticides.

While some individuals in the pest control industry are skeptical about the use of dogs for detection, these specially trained dogs do a 97% accurate in finding live infestations. This is compared to only the 30% accuracy of humans with visual detection.

There are a lot of companies that do the inspection with a dog. If you need to hire one you find out what recommendation and certificate that they have and, of course, how much they charge. The hourly rate for bedbug dogs is about 325$.

Dogs on job

Every day man’s best friend is hard at work helping us in the battle against bed bugs!

A bedbug sniffing dog will investigate a room in a matter of minutes. The handler will guide the dog through the room letting the dog sniff for detection in every applicable area. Bedbug dogs are trained to indicate when they have discovered a bed bug scent. Once a dog has alerted to a possible bed bug, the handler will make a visual inspection to confirm the dog’s findings.

These specialized dogs bring relief to clients who were convinced they had an infestation while saving clients thousands of dollars in costly treatment methods. Trainers and handlers agree that it is a rewarding career, and the dogs are happy with the treats and love they receive for a job well done.

Typically, smaller breeds are preferred when it comes to bedbug because they are less intimidating to residents who have afraid to dogs. Also, small dogs can be lifted by their handlers to search high shelves and drawers in suspected residences. Hunting breeds, such as Blood Hounds and Beagles, are popular to use because they have been bred for centuries to seek out prey and fetch the carcasses for their handlers. Other breeds used include Border Collies, Jack Russell Terriers, Labradors, and Aussies.
