BOSTON TERRIER DOG BREED

Description:

The Boston Terrier dog was bred in Boston, Massachusetts. The Boston Terrier was developed by crossing two breeds: The Bulldog and the English White Terrier and he was intended for catching burrowing rodents. This “American Gentleman” was accepted in 1893 by the American Kennel Club.

Characteristics:

The Boston Terrier is a compactly-built, sturdy dog with sweet personality. He is delicate, good-natured and very polite, which explains his notorious “American Gentleman” tag. Boston Terriers are a delightful combination of determination, strength, balance and grace.

Character:

Highly intelligent, vigilant and enthusiastic, the Boston Terrier is very affectionate and loyal to his master. He gets very attached to his family, and so he is considered to be a full-fledged member of the family. Boston Terriers can tolerate small children and do well with older people. However, males tend to fight with other dogs for leadership. Ultimately, the Boston Terrier is friendly, very playful and eager to please.

Coat / Care:

The coat is short, glossy, smooth and very pleasant to the touch. The Boston Terrier is marked with white in proportion to either black, brindle and seal, or a combination of the three. Shedding is of medium intensity, so regular grooming with a stiff brush is enough. Bathe your dog when absolutely necessary, using shampoo for moderate stringency. Boston Terrier tends to drool, which requires constant wiping. In addition, it is important to control the dog’s ears and eyes to protect them from contamination.

Health Problems:

The Boston Terrier is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Cataracts, Cherry eye, Patellar Luxation, Heart murmurs, Reverse sneezing, Megaesophagus, Allergies, Brain tumors and Deafness. The Boston Terrier has a life expectancy of 13 to 15 years.

Weight / Height

The male Boston Terrier dog breed’s height is around 15 – 17 inches and weighs around 10 and 25 pounds. Female Boston Terrier dogs can reach a size from 15 – 17 inches and weighs between 10 and 25 pounds.

Training:

The Boston Terrier is a very diligent dog. Since this breed is indifferent to house rules, obedience training is a necessity. As the Boston Terrier is very delicate, crude or heavy-handed training methods are useless, as a matter of fact, love, respect, patience and occasional food reward have a major impact on his behavior.

Activity:

Boston Terriers love walking on a leash with the owner, and they enjoy family activities. Even though this is a lively dog, this breed doesn’t have excessive exercise requirements. This is most definitely an indoor dog, but he enjoys playing in a yard nonetheless.
