Briquet Griffon Vendeen

Description:

Bred in France for the purpose of hunting hare and other small game, the Briquet Griffon Vendeen virtually disappeared after the World War II. Fortunately, thanks to efforts of Hubert Dezamy, a French dog shows judge, this breed was restored. Even today, the Griffons are extremely rare, not only in the rest of the world but in their home country.

Height: 19-22 inches  Weight: 48-53 pounds  Lifespan: 10-12 years

Characteristics:

The Briquet Griffon Vendeen is a surprisingly well-built, active and courageous dog. This agile and athletic breed is able to adapt to the most difficult weather and terrain. Griffons are passionate hunters with amazing stamina and fortitude. The most distinctive feature of this breed is its bushy double coat and a short head.

Character:

Briquet Griffon Vendeen is fun, cheerful and a playful dog. However, he is independent and not always obedient. Griffons are fine companions for children, they get along well with other dogs and they are not too possessive. The Briquet Griffon Vendeen is dedicated, hardworking and reliable friend.

Coat / Care:

Briquet Griffon Vendeen has a double-layered coat. The outer layer is long, dense and bushy. The undercoat is soft, dense and thick. Griffons come in fawn, light brown, white and orange, white and gray and even tri-colored. The long and thick hair on the muzzle and eyebrows form a distinctive mustache. In order prevent tangling, the coat must be regularly brushed and combed. Bathe your dog only when absolutely necessary.

Health Problems:

The Briquet Griffon Vendeen is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Hip Dysplasia, Patellar Luxation, Ear Infections, Epilepsy, Glaucoma, Eye Problems, Hypothyroidism, Skin and Food Allergies and Deafness. The Briquet Griffon Vendeen has a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

Weight / Height:

The male Briquet Griffon Vendeen dog breed’s height is around 19 – 22 inches and weighs around 48 and 53 pounds. Female Briquet Griffon Vendeen dogs can reach a size from 19 – 21 inches and weighs between 48 and 53 pounds.

Training:

The Griffon`s extreme independence and unbending character seriously aggravate the teaching process. Rough or heavy-handed training methods are completely useless. Education should be fair, consistent and respectful, and the teacher should be patient.

Activity:

Since dogs of this breed have strong herding instincts, the Griffons thrive in a large, safe area where they can roam around and explore. Hence, the Briquet Griffon Vendeen is not suited for apartment living. He needs a significant amount of training, exercise and mental stimulation.
