Description

The Cockapoo is a hybrid breed, designed by crossing Cocker Spaniel breeds (American Cocker Spaniel or English Cocker Spaniel) with a Poodle. Perhaps this is why it has become so popular as a pet. The Cockapoo is a sturdy little dog with a wonderful character. Although Cockapoos are pretty quiet dogs which are characterized by a certain passivity; in the absence of proper socialization, they may show some aggression. Since the Cockapoo is a designer dog, he is not recognized by purebred associations such as the American Kennel Club or the United Kennel Club.

Characteristics

The Cockapoo is a loyal, intelligent and very affectionate dog. This breed is an excellent student, which makes it really easy to train. This is not surprising, since the Cockapoo is the offspring of one of the smartest dogs in the world- Poodle.

Character

A dog of this breed is very eager to earn the praise from his master. The Cockapoo is energetic and friendly, becoming extremely popular as a family companion. Even though Cockapoos are usually quite peaceful in communication with children and with other pets, it is not recommended to leave them unsupervised. Since both the Poodle and a Spaniel have some problems with aggression, this breed has inherited this shortcoming. Therefore, the necessary training should be carried out at very young age.

Coat / Care

Although dogs of this breed are low-shedder, they need regular brushing and combing in order to prevent matting. Also, Cockapoos need professional grooming at least once a year. The coat varies in color and texture. Hence, some species will have a sleeker coat like the Cocker Spaniel while others may have a curlier coat of the Poodle.

Health Problems

The Cockapoo is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Patellar Luxation, Hip Dysplasia, Allergies, Liver Disease, Ear Infections and Cataracts. The Cockapoo has a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

The Teacup Toy hybrid breed’s height is less than 6 inches and weighs less than 10 pounds. The Toy Cockapoo hybrid breed’s height is around 10 inches and weighs below 12 pounds. The Miniature Cockapoo hybrid breed’s height is around 11 – 14 inches and weighs between 13 and 18 pounds. The Maxi Cockapoo hybrid breed’s height is around 10 inches and weighs weigh over 19 pounds.

Training

The Cockapoo is a very intelligent dog that can literally grasp any information. This dog will easily pass a course of general training, and with proper care, this breed can become a perfect pet. Teaching method should be based on consistency and perseverance. Also, you must treat the dog with kindness.

Activity

The Cockapoo is a carefree and cheerful dog that loves human attention. This dog enjoys spending time with his owner, especially going for a walk. Cockapoos are big foodies, so it is very important to monitor their diet and to stimulate them physically.
