LAKELAND TERRIER DOG BREED

Description:

The Lakeland Terrier is friendly, very cheerful and affectionate, which makes him the ideal partner for family life. Alert, very brave and independent, this breed is not recommended for inexperienced owners. Hence, without professional education, the Lakeland Terrier may behave very mischievously. The Lakeland Terrier was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1934.

Height: 13-15 inches  Weight: 15-17 pounds  Lifespan:12-15 years

Characteristics:

The Lakeland Terrier is extremely wary of strangers, but he gets along very well with other dogs. If properly socialized at a young age, this dog can also get along with cats. Since Lakeland Terriers love to chase anything that moves within their reach, they need plenty of space to run. Comparable Breed: Welsh Terrier, Wire Fox Terrier.

Character:

Lively and high-spirited, the Lakeland Terrier is exceptionally good with children. Like all terriers, this variety has a tendency to behave aggressively, therefore it requires persistent and strict training. Lakeland Terriers love to dig and they bark very loudly, which makes them great watchdogs.

Coat / Care:

This breed has a double coat which is very dense and compact. While the outer layer is rigid and has a somewhat wiry structure, the undercoat should be soft and close-fitting to the dog’s body. Despite the fact that the Lakeland Terrier barely sheds, he requires careful maintenance. About three times a year, a dog of this breed needs professional trimming. In addition, make sure to regularly pluck the dog’s hair in order to prevent it from tangling, and continuously monitor the purity of the breed’s characteristic beard.

Health Problems:

The Lakeland Terrier is generally hardy dog breed and doesn’t suffer from any known hereditary health problems. The Lakeland Terrier has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Weight / Height

The male Lakeland Terrier dog breed’s height is around 13 – 15 inches and weighs around 15 and 17 pounds. Female Lakeland Terrier dogs can reach a size from 13 – 14 inches and weighs between 15 and 17 pounds.

Training:

This naturally energetic dog requires a variety of training methods. Please note that the Lakeland Terrier will have some difficulties with submitting to the house rules regarding cleanliness. In order to teach your pet to behave appropriately, it is necessary to carry out early course of general training and intense socialization.

Activity:

Like most terriers, the Lakeland Terrier is a very lively dog. Therefore, he will need plenty of space to roam around and explore, so the best environment is a spacious yard. However, if you stimulate your pet both physically and mentally, he can bear apartment living. Since Lakeland Terriers are very agile, they are good companions for jogging and playing games.
