MAREMMA SHEEPDOG DOG BREED

Description:

The Maremma Sheepdog (usually called the Maremmano) is a working breed, originally from central Italy. Today, the Maremmano is a rarity. This breed was designed to be a livestock guardian dog and to protect the property.

Characteristics:

The Maremma Sheepdog is a large and muscularly build dog breed. The Maremma Sheepdog breed is very self-conscious and has a striking appearance. Comparable Breed: Great Pyrenees, Kuvasz and Akbash.

Character:

Maremma Sheepdogs are strictly working dogs, not suitable to be family pets. They are smart and independent. This breed is extremely adept at protecting the farm, herds and people. The Maremma Sheepdog gets along well with dogs and other pets. Also, he is very attentive and affectionate to children. This dog is extremely vigilant and prone to excessive barking. Ultimately, the Maremma Sheepdog is authentic, loyal and devoted.

Coat / Care:

This breed has a two-layered coat. While the outer layer is long, thick, coarse and slightly wavy, the undercoat is soft and dense. The Maremma Sheepdog’s coat perfectly protects him against the adverse weather. This dog sheds profusely twice a year. Therefore, the dog should be groomed thoroughly during the shedding season. Also, make sure to periodically clean your pet’s ears and paw pads in order to remove the dirt. Due to lack of active breeding, the Maremma Sheepdog is extremely rare.

Health Problems:

Therefore, there is no specific data about this breed’s health concerns. However, Maremma Sheepdogs do not tolerate too hot climate. The Maremma Sheepdog has a life expectancy of 11 to 13 years.

Weight / Height

The male Maremma Sheepdog breed’s height is around 24 – 29 inches and weighs around 66 and 100 pounds. Female Maremma dogs can reach a size from 24 – 27 inches and weighs between 66 and 100 pounds.

Training:

The Maremma Sheepdog requires early socialization and obedience training. This dog sees his owner as an equal friend and requires the same attitude. Maremma Sheepdogs will not tolerate rudeness and disrespect, but they do need a firm hand.

Activity:

The Maremma Sheepdog is not suitable for living in an apartment. Hence, he needs a farm where he can get the required amount of physical and mental work. This dog enjoys independent activities in a spacious yard.
