PATTERDALE TERRIER DOG BREED

Description:

The Patterdale Terrier (also called The Black Fell Terrier) is not as vigorous as other Terriers but is still quite active. This breed was bred specifically for hunting and therefore has developed strong hunting instincts. The Patterdale Terrier is not recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Characteristics:

This is a sturdy, compactly build breed. Due to his strong prey drive, the Patterdale Terrier tends to chase any small animal within his reach. Comparable Breeds: The Jack Russell Terrier and Border Terrier.

Character:

The Patterdale Terrier is smart and loyal to his family. This dog is quite unpredictable and can not be trusted without a leash, otherwise he will run away. The Patterdale is very independent and strong-willed, prone to developing Small Dog Syndrome.  However, he gets very attached to humans and is always willing to please his owner.

Coat / Care:

The Patterdale Terrier usually has a short, coarse coat, which is has a wiry structure. These dogs come in a variety of colors, including black, liver, red and bronze. Also, white markings on the chest and feet are allowed. The Patterdale’s coat requires minimal care. In order to minimize hair loss, it will be enough to occasionally comb the dog, using a stiff brush. Also, since Patterdale Terriers love digging, it is highly important to clean the dog’s paws after each walk.

Health Problems:

The Patterdale Terrier is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) and Eye issues. The Patterdale Terrier has a life expectancy of 11 to 13 years.

Weight / Height

The male Patterdale Terrier dog breed’s height is around 10 – 15 inches and weighs around 15 and 30 pounds. Female Patterdale Terrier dogs can reach a size from 10 – 15 inches and weighs between 15 and 30 pounds.

Training:

The Patterdale Terrier can be quite a challenge since it’s very difficult to keep him an interest in learning. Therefore, it is very important to carry out early education and socialization. The Patterdale requires a professional coach, who will be able to impose the rules. Hence, the coach should be strict but never disrespectful.

Activity:

Patterdale Terriers need intensive, day-to-day exercising in order to fulfill their hunting cravings. This breed is very inquisitive, so it needs a spacious yard for running and exploring. The Patterdale Terrier is not suitable for living in an apartment.
