PHARAOH HOUND DOG BREED

Description:

The Pharaoh Hound is an intelligent dog, well-mannered by nature. Pharaoh Hounds are not recommended for families with cats or other small pets because these dogs are distinguished with highly developed hunting instinct. The Pharaoh Hound was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1983.

Characteristics:

The Pharaoh Hound is cheerful, calm and has an independent mind. Since this dog breed does very well with children, it would be the best companion for a growing child. On the other hand, Pharaoh Hounds do not trust strangers. However, if Pharaohs do not feel threatened, they are not dangerous. It is highly important to socialize a Pharaoh Hound at puppyhood. Comparable Breeds: The Ibizan Hound and Cirneco dell’Etna.

Character:

The Pharaoh Hound is quite successful in dog racing and other kinds of dog sports. Representatives of this breed do not like to live in a cage, they can even become frustrated. On the contrary, Pharaohs are wonderful family companions. Moreover, these dogs are ideal for families with small children, provided that they know how to communicate with dogs. The Pharaoh is active, yet very calm and collected.

Coat / Care:

This beautiful and athletic dog is adorned with a coat that does not require special care. Hence, the coat is short and glossy, tight to the dog’s body. Pharaohs come in a rich tan or a chestnut tan. The Pharaoh Hound needs to be cleaned a rubber brush in order to remove excess hair. In addition, this dog breed does not require regular bathing because it’s a low shedder. The Pharaoh Hound is resistant to temperature changes.

Health Problems:

The Pharaoh Hound is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be sensitive to Anesthesia and can be prone to Allergies. The Pharaoh Hound has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Weight / Height

The male Pharaoh Hound dog breed’s height is around 23 – 25 inches and weighs around 45 and 55 pounds. Female Pharaoh Hound dogs can reach a size from 21 – 24 inches and weighs between 45 and 55 pounds.

Training:

Pharaoh Hounds are intelligent dogs, not too demanding when it comes to training. Education should be homogeneous and soft, because this breed is very delicate and furthermore, irresponsive to coarse training methods. Also, the coach should be experienced and respectful.

Activity:

The Pharaoh needs to be protected from the cold, but he can bear living in warmer climates. Pharaoh Hounds can jump high, and they also have a very strong prey drive. Hence, if you keep your dog in the yard, make sure it is surrounded by a high fence.
