PORTUGUESE POINTER DOG BREED

Description:

The Portuguese Pointer is an ultimate gun dog, which was bred in Portugal in the 14^th century. It is believed that this breed descended from the ancient Iberian hunting dog. Today, Portuguese Pointers are one of the rarest dog breeds.

Characteristics:

The Portuguese Pointer is a medium-sized dog, extremely prized for his impeccable hunting instincts. This dog can perform as a pointer and retriever, from both land and water. Hence, Portuguese Pointers are used for hunting small and big game, and they are particularly successful in red-legged partridge hunting. Comparable Breed: The German Shorthaired Pointer.

Character:

The Portuguese Pointer is intelligent, gentle and very affectionate. He is a faithful companion that can easily find a common language with other dog breeds and children. Despite the fact that this breed is never aggressive, Portuguese Pointers will bark very loudly to warn the family about a possible threat.

Coat / Care:

The Portuguese Pointer has a rough and thick, short hair. The hair on the dog’s muzzle and ears is longer than on other parts of the body, and it has a velvety structure. The coat color is yellow or light brown. White markings are allowed. Even though Portuguese Pointers shed throughout the year, they need regular brushing. Also, the dog’s ears require special attention in order to prevent possible infections.

Health Problems:

The Portuguese Pointer is generally healthy dog breed, this breed has no major health issues. The Portuguese Pointer has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Weight / Height

The male Portuguese Pointer dog breed’s height is around 20 – 24 inches and weighs around 44 and 60 pounds. Female Portuguese Pointer dogs can reach a size from 19 – 22 inches and weighs between 35 and 50 pounds.

Training:

The Portuguese Pointer must undergo early socializing and general obedience training. Even though this breed is highly trainable, the coach must strict and tenacious, but never disrespectful. Portuguese Pointers have a desire to please their owners.

Activity:

The Portuguese Pointer should not be kept in a city apartment, as he requires plenty of outdoor activities. This breed really enjoys all kinds of activities with the family, and it should be engaged during the hunting season.
