Rhodesian Ridgeback

RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK DOG BREED

Description:

Obedient, friendly and kind, the Rhodesian Ridgeback (or Lion Dog) is a great companion dog. This dog breed is not suitable for families with small children (because they are too rough), but it gets along with teenagers. Brave and rather vigilant, Rhodesian Ridgebacks can be overly stubborn and difficult to train, especially if you apply unsuitable methods of training. The Rhodesian Ridgeback was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1955.

Height: 24-27 inches  Weight: 60-85 pounds  Lifespan: 9-15 years

Characteristics:

The Rhodesian Ridgeback can bear living with other pets, provided that they grew up in the same household. He is very intelligent and protective, always ready to defend his family and territory. Rhodesian Ridgebacks do not tolerate loneliness and boredom. If left neglected, they may become unmanageable, even aggressive. Comparable Breeds:  The Bullmastiff and Great Dane.

Character:

This hunting breed can easily adapt to the family lifestyle. Indeed, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a wonderful, faithful friend. It may be too shy with strangers, and therefore needs early exposure to humans. Rhodesian Ridgebacks get very attached to only one member of the family.

Coat / Care:

The Rhodesian Ridgeback has a rather distinctive trait. Hence, the hair on his back grows in the opposite direction of the hair on other parts of the body. This breed’s coat is short, dense, smooth and shiny; and according to the standard, it should not be silky. Rhodesian Ridgeback has a light wheaten to red wheaten coat. They are moderate shedders. Brush the dog with a firm bristle brush to minimize hair loss. Bathing should be occasional.

Health Problems:

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Elbow Dysplasia, Hip Dysplasia and Dermoid Sinus. The Rhodesian Ridgeback has a life expectancy of 9 to 15 years.

Weight / Height

The male Rhodesian Ridgeback dog breed’s height is around 25 – 27 inches and weighs around 75 and 85 pounds. Female Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs can reach a size from 24 – 26 inches and weighs between 60 and 70 pounds.

Training:

Education should be consistent and fun. The Rhodesian Ridgeback should start training at an early age in order to avoid possible problems. Also, the coach must be firm and decisive. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are excellent watchdogs and great hunters, but hunting suits them better.

Activity:

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is active, highly energetic and inquisitive, so the owner has to be equally hardy. This dog is a wonderful companion for jogging or travelling. In addition, the Ridgeback loves long walks on a leash or exploring the environment. This breed thrives best in a fenced yard, at least medium in size.
