STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER

Description:

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Staffy, Nanny Dog) was bred in England for bull baiting, bear baiting and lion baiting. In 1835, baiting was banned in Britain and fans of this bloody sport began to use this breed for dog fighting. Even though Staffords are still involved in the fighting in the Third World, they have become common companion dogs in the United States and Europe.

Characteristics:

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are muscular, strong and agile dogs. They are very bold and aggressive enough. A distinctive feature of this breed is its broad and remarkably expressive face. Comparable Breed: The French Bulldog.

Character:

Despite its notorious reputation, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is today known as a reliable partner and excellent watchdog. This dog breed gets strongly attached to his master. Also, Staffords are quite gentle with children, and they are even referred to as a Nanny Dogs. However, Staffordshire Bull Terriers do not get along with other pets, if they did not grow up together. This breed is not suitable for dog breeders with no previous experience.

Coat / Care:

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a soft, smooth, dense and short fur, which can be blue, brown, black or red. Stripes, spots and/or white markings are allowed. This breed sheds minimally, so it requires minimal maintenance. Brush your pet weekly to reduce hair loss. Bathe as needed. Since the Staffy does not tolerate hypothermia and overheating, he feels best in enclosed spaces.

Health Problems:

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are susceptible to juvenile cataracts, hip and elbow dysplasia, dislocation of the patella and epilepsy. Also, these dogs have a tendency to skin allergies and demodectic mange. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a life expectancy of 10 to 16 years.

Training:

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier needs socialization and obedience training at very young age. If the training is based on consistency and positive reinforcement, this breed will be very responsive and eager to learn. Hence, properly trained Staffords can even be used for psychological therapy (Canistherapy).

Activity:

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are sporting dogs and therefore need a daily workout. Most of all, this breed enjoys family activities and running with the owner. This dog should be kept on a sturdy leash in public places. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier feels equally well in a small, fenced yard and in a city apartment.
