THAI RIDGEBACK DOG BREED

Description:

Thai Ridgeback is one of the oldest dog breeds, used to guard and hunt. As the name implies, this dog first appeared in Thailand. Outside his country of origin, the Thai Ridgeback is very uncommon. Thai Ridgebacks are considered to be semi-wild dogs.

Height: 20-24 inches  Weight: 51-75 pounds  Lifespan: 12-14 years

Characteristics:

The Thai Ridgeback is a powerful, muscular dog of medium size. He is brave, very agile and elegant. This breed is distinguished by a keen eyesight and hearing. Thai Ridgebacks enjoy sports activities, and they can easily adapt to any type of environment. Comparable Breeds: The Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Character:

The Thai Ridgebacks is a very intelligent dog, infinitely loyal to his master. He is a true friend and a ferocious watchdog. On the other hand, this breed is quite suspicious with strangers and prefers to avoid them. Thai Ridgebacks get along well with older children, but they get along poorly with other dog breeds and other animals (if they did not grow up together). These dogs have a highly developed protective instinct, and they will protect your family from anything that constitutes a threat. Since this breed does not tolerate loneliness, it is not suitable for people who are preoccupied with their work. Also, the Thai Ridgeback is not recommended for novice dog breeders.

Coat / Care:

Thai Ridgebacks have two types of coat: hard and straight, with a very thin and soft undercoat; and thick, velvet in texture. A distinctive feature of this breed is its spot on the back (ridge). The hair on the back grows in the direction opposite to the core. The shape of the ridge may resemble sheet, seat, needle, pen, arrow, lute or violin. Thais come in different colors, such as black, blue, brindle, brown, red and white. Shedding is moderate, so this breed requires weekly care. Hence, the coat should be regularly combed with a brush or comb. Bathe the dog only in case of necessity. The Thai Ridgeback does not tolerate cold climate.

Health Problems:

The Thai Ridgeback is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to hip dysplasia and several skin diseases. The Thai Ridgeback has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Weight / Height

The male Thai Ridgeback dog breed’s height is around 22 – 24 inches and weighs around 51 and 75 pounds. Female Thai Ridgeback dogs can reach a size from 20 – 22 inches and weighs between 51 and 70 pounds.

Training:

Thai Ridgebacks require early socialization and training. Training must be consistent, and the coach should be patient and fair. This breed learns quickly and is always happy to please its master.

Activity:

Thai Ridgebacks love to exercise. Be sure to keep your dog busy, otherwise it gets boring and destructive. Hence, engage the Thai in all family activities. This breed feels good in a city apartment, provided that it exercises sufficiently. But, the best habitat for the Thai Ridgeback is a house with a well-fenced garden. In crowded places you need to walk the dog on a sturdy leash.
