Description:

The American Hairless Terrier was accidentally discovered in the 1970s, by breeder Edwin Scott, when a Rat Terrier puppy appeared naked. One nice feature of this unique breed is that it does not cause allergies, so American Bare Terriers have become extremely popular in the United States as well as in other countries such as England, Finland and Canada. The American Hairless Terrier is the first hairless dog bred in the United States. As of January 1, 2004, the United Kennel Club deemed this dog a separate terrier breed, in January 2016 it will achieve full American Kennel Club recognition.

Characteristics:

Character:

The American Hairless Terrier has a delicate, playful nature and loves its master. This dog gets on well with adults and children and it is very friendly with other dogs, cats and generally any pet. Nevertheless, the American Hairless Terrier is quite capable of protecting its territory. American Hairless Terriers make good guards, barking in a case of the arrival of visitors or suspicious, unusual sounds.

Coat / Care:

The American Hairless Terrier has two distinct subspecies: naked and covered with hair. Naked puppies are born covered with a soft undercoat, which completely disappears when the puppy turns 8 weeks. Coated subspecies have thick, short, smooth and dense cover. The delicate skin of Naked American Terrier must be protected from heat and cold, therefore, it is recommended to use sunscreen in the summer and a sweater or suit in the winter. Bathe your dog regularly using a mild shampoo and do not forget to use a moisturizing lotion to keep the skin healthy. You also need to regularly check and trim claws.

Health Problems:

The American Hairless Terrier is a fairly healthy breed, but he is prone to skin rash (The typical allergic rash is an urticarial rash, which is also known as hives or nettle rash. It is very itchy.) The American Hairless Terrier has a life expectancy of 14 to 16 years.

The American Hairless Terrier is perfectly adapted for living in a city apartment. It needs plenty of exercises and the ideal option is a small or medium-sized fenced yard, because the American Hairless Terrier loves to play on their own. American Hairless Terriers are strong and athletic. They enjoy participating in agility games like its other terrier cousins. This dog typically likes to dig. It is not a strong swimmer and should be monitored around water.
