BEAUCERON DOG BREED

Description:

The Beauceron originated in France in the 1500s. This dog is a great shepherd which was used by the farmers to protect the cattle, sheep and the family. During the First and Second World War, Beaucerons were used as messengers of the French army, and they are prized for their ability to detect mines. Today, the Beauceron is successfully used in armed forces and the police, but he is also a great companion dog.

Characteristics:

The Beauceron is a robust, athletic, working dog. The head is long, with the excessively broad muzzle. The dark brown eyes are slightly oval and the tail is fringed. These dogs are calm and eager to please, they are fearless yet gentle. Comparable Breed: Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd.

Character:

The Beauceron is well known for his loyalty and devotion. This breed is affectionate, brave and highly intelligent. Due to their keen pastoral instinct, Beaucerons are not recommended for families with small children. However, they get along well with other pets and with older children who know how to behave around these dogs. Because they are distrustful of strangers, Beaucerons make excellent guard dogs. Dogs of this breed do not tolerate long-term isolation.

Coat / Care:

The Beauceron wears a two-layered, harsh coat which is his natural shelter from adverse weather. The undercoat is furry, silky and very warm. A dog of this breed must be brushed twice a week, and more often during the shedding season. Bathe your pet only if necessary.

Health Problems:

The Beauceron is generally a healthy, hardy breed, but some lines are prone to bloat and hip dysplasia. They may even have issues with congenital heart disease and gastric volvulus. The Beauceron dog has a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

Training:

Early socialization and obedience training are extremely important. Training should be based on respect, patience and consistency. More importantly, the owner must set the rules and prevent dog’s domination.

Activity:

Beaucerons need constant exercise and mental stimulation. If a dog of this breed becomes bored or lonely, his behavior can escalate into destructiveness. The Beauceron requires constant communication with his owner, as he gets very attached. This breed will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. They are moderately active indoors but will do best with at least a large yard.
