Dog Breeds

Belgian Tervuren

Description:

The Belgian Tervuren was bred in Belgium and was originally used for grazing sheep and as a watchdog. The Belgian Tervuren is one of the four breeds of Belgian Shepherd and is considered the most beautiful of all. During the I and the II World War, Belgian Tervurens were used as sled dogs, messengers and guard dogs. Today, they continue to work as guide dogs on farms, as well as the police reinforcement.

Height: 22-26 inches  Weight: 45-75 pounds  Lifespan: 12-14 years

Characteristics:

This is a well-balanced breed of medium size, elegant in appearance and adorned with gorgeous fur. Belgian Tervurens look very impressive, they are powerful, intelligent and graceful. This breed is brave, agile and full of life. Comparable Breed: Belgian Malinois, Belgian Laekenois.

Character:

The Belgian Tervuren is loyal to his master and is in need of constant communication with him. Dogs of this breed are not recommended for inexperienced owners. These are good guards and, as a rule, very attached to only one family member. The Belgian Tervuren is suspicious and wary of strangers, always ready to protect his family, property, and territory. He is good with children and usually with other dogs. However, he may see cats and other pets as prey. Do not leave your pet alone for a long time, as this can lead to its destructive behavior.

Coat / Care:

The Belgian Tervueren`s most identifiable feature is his long coat that consists of two layers. The outer layer is straight, long and very thick. The undercoat is composed of thin and dark dense hair. The coat is especially rich on the chest, shoulders and neck. Weekly cleaning is required to remove excess hair and to prevent the formation of tangles. Bathe your dog only in case of urgent need.

Health Problems:

The Belgian Tervueren is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Cancer, Epilepsy, Thyroid Disease, Hip Dysplasia and Elbow Dysplasia. Furthermore, these dogs are extremely sensitive to anesthesia. The Belgian Tervueren has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Weight / Height:

The male Belgian Tervueren dog breed’s height is around 24 – 26 inches and weighs around 55 and 75 pounds. Female Belgian Tervueren dogs can reach a size from 22 – 24 inches and weighs between 45 and 60 pounds. Male dogs are generally larger than females.

Training:

The Belgian Tervuren is very smart and obedient. However, he is demanding and seeking to dominate, so he needs early, intensive and long-term socialization and obedience training. Dogs of this breed perceive coarse or despotic methods with indignation, so training should be based on respect, fairness, patience, and reward.

Activity:

The Belgian Tervuren needs a significant amount of physical exercise and mental stimulation. Belgian Tervurens enjoy being outdoors, where they will have plenty of space to run and play. The Belgian Tervuren needs a calm, strong, energetic leader.
