Bolognese Dog

Description

Genetically related to Havanese and the Bichon Frise, the Bolognese Dog is a breed that was developed in Italy around the 11^th century. The name refers to the central Italian city of Bologna. Dogs of this breed were real darlings of many Renaissance artists and were often given as a gift to the Belgian royal court. However, with the passage of this period, the Bolognese breed almost became extinct. Fortunately, the breed was saved and restored by Jean Franco Giannella, but to this day it remains quite rare in other countries.

Characteristics

The Bolognese Dog is a small, sturdy, compact dog. These dogs are obedient, faithful and easy going pets. Bolognese Dog is known for they intelligence, playfulness and charm.

Character

Dogs of this breed get along well with children, especially with older ones. They easily find a common language with other animals. The Bolognese dog becomes really attached to his family, and he becomes lonesome if left alone for a long time. In this case, the Bolognese barks incessantly and becomes damaging to the environment. This is very timid and shy dog, suspicious of strangers, so it is necessary to conduct timely socialization. Bolognese has a sharp vision and good hearing, which makes him an excellent watchdog.

Coat / Care

Bolognese dogs have long, dense and fluffy white coat, evenly covering the whole body from the head to tail. Bolognese is a small hypoallergenic dog. This breed does not shed; nevertheless, it needs daily combing to avoid tangling. Professional grooming is recommended at least once a month.

Health Problems

The Bolognese Dog is typically a healthy breed and they are not prone to any major problems. The Bolognese has a life expectancy of 12 to 16 years.

Weight / Height

The male Bolognese dog breed’s height is around 11 – 12 inches and weighs around 10 and 12 pounds. Female Bolognese dogs can reach a size from 9 – 11 inches and weighs between 7 and 10 pounds.

Training

The Bolognese dog needs early socialization and obedience training. This dog breeds are very smart which makes them good students. Since they have trouble adjusting to house rules, it is best to keep them in a special box at first. Education should be strict but respectful.

Activity

The Bolognese Dog is suited for a city apartment if he is not neglected. This breed needs constant companionship with its owner and requires daily exercising, such as long walks on a leash or free-style games outdoors.
