Chinese Chongqing Dog

Description:

This unique, ancient breed comes from the Southwestern Region of China. These dogs exist more than 2,000 years and were bred during the reign of the Han Dynasty in Ancient China. Chinese Chongqing Dogs have been a symbol of high status in society, so they were available only for the aristocracy. These dogs are used for hunting small game, focusing solely on their intuition. To this day, the Chinese Chongqing Dog is a rarity and is extremely difficult to find.

Height: 14-20 inches  Weight: 33-54 lbs.  Lifespan: 15-18 years

Characteristics:

The Chinese Chongqing Dog is a medium-sized dog, which has a strong physique and somewhat square shape. This is a well-developed, muscular and alert animal. The Chinese Chongqing Dog has a noble appearance, full of dignity.

Character:

The Chinese Chongqing Dog is not suitable for inexperienced or insecure dog breeders. It has a strong guarding instinct and very high prey drive. This is a breed that was not developed as a result of selective breeding but in the process of natural evolution. Chinese Chongqing Dogs are devoted and loyal companions, and they do quite well with older children. At the same time, the dog of this breed is not recommended for families with dogs of other breeds and small pets. The Chinese Chongqing dog is extremely cold and suspicious of strangers. This dog will, without a doubt, do anything to protect his family, property, and territory.

Coat / Care:

The coat is smooth, dense, short, coarse and glossy. The Chinese Chongqing Dog requires minimal care. From time to time, you need to bathe your pet by using a mild shampoo. This will prevent skin problems.  Chinese Chongqing Dogs cannot tolerate cold climates though.

Health Problems: 

Because of the extreme rarity of this breed, there is no specific information about health issues. The Chinese Chongqing Dog has a life expectancy of 15 to 18 years.

Weight / Height

The male Chinese Chongqing Dog breed’s height is around 16 – 20 inches and weighs around 44 and 54 pounds. Female Chinese Chongqing Dogs can reach a size from 14 – 16 inches and weighs between 33 and 44 pounds.

Training:

The Chinese Chongqing Dog needs a dominant owner who knows how to carry out proper education. Crude, despotic or heavy-handed methods can only aggravate the learning process. Early socialization and obedience training are mandatory. Lessons should be built upon respect, firmness, fairness and consistency.

Activity:

The Chinese Chongqing Dog is not suitable for life in a city apartment or condominium. Chinese Chongqing Dogs require extensive and intense exercising in securely fenced yard. Make sure not to let your pet walk freely in the unfenced yard. Also, keep him on a secure leash when going for a walk.
