The Coton de Tulear was bred on The Island of Madagascar in the early 20th century. This breed is still quite rare, particularly in the United States. This breed is one of the longest living dogs in the World. The Coton de Tulear was officially recognized by the American Kannel Club in 2014.

The Coton de Tulear is a very vigilant dog, very protective of his territory. If it’s really necessary, this dog will bark to warn his family about possible danger. Cotons are a very clever animal, which believes that all your focus should fully belong to him alone. The Coton De Tulear is sociable by nature, he is great with other dogs and animals, and he gets particularly excited about picnics or any other event.
In French, the Coton De Tulear means “cotton”. This breed got its name because of its white, furry, long coat. Hence, the coat is light, fluffy, has a texture similar to cotton fiber and is highly resistant to contamination. Coton De Tulears are small hypoallergenic dogs. The Coton De Tulear sheds little, mainly in the spring. In order to prevent tangling of the hair, Cotons need daily brushing and combing. Particular attention should be paid to the areas behind the ears, legs, and elbows, which requires regular trimming.
The Coton De Tulear breed generally has no major health concerns. However, luxation of the patella, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and Hip Dysplasia can be seen in Cotons, even though they’re not common. The Coton De Tulear has a life expectancy of 15 to 19 years.
The male Coton De Tulear dog breed’s height is around 10 – 12 inches and weighs around 9 and 15 pounds. Female dogs can reach a size from 6 – 10 inches and weighs between 8 and 13 pounds.
The Coton de Tulear is extremely intelligent dog. This breed grows rather slowly, and therefore may be difficult to get accustomed to observe cleanliness in the house. It is necessary to carry out the dog’s socialization and obedience course at puppyhood. Cotons require sustained, consistent training, based on love and respect. The best results can be achieved on the basis of praise and motivation.
This breed enjoys being indoor. Therefore, the Coton De Tulears are particularly well-suited to apartment living. Cotons do not need special training. Since these dogs enjoy playing and going for walks, this is enough for their proper development.
