Saluki

Description:

The Saluki (once known as the Persian Greyhound) is considered one of the most ancient dog breeds, which was used to hunt hares and gazelles. This breed was developed in the Middle East, where it is very popular even today. It is believed that that the name of this dog is a transliteration of the Arabic word for the hound. The Saluki is recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Characteristics:

Salukis are sensitive, gentle and affectionate. He is calm, friendly and devoted to his family. The Saluki has a special grace, and he successfully combines the speed and agility. This breed is very inquisitive and has a highly developed instinct. Comparable Breeds: The Borzoi and Greyhound.

Character:

The Saluki is intelligent and resourceful. This dog is strongly tied to his entire family and cannot bear being alone. If left neglected for long, Salukis will feel very anxious and can even fall into severe depression. This breed gets along well with young people, but it cannot find a common language with other dog breeds and small animals. The Saluki tends to bark excessively without reason.

Coat / Care:

Salukis have two types of coat: smooth and so-called ‘pen’. The coat is short, lying close to the body. However, the Saluki can be decorated with silky feathering on the ears, under the tail, legs and back of the thigh. This dog breed comes in a variety of colors, including golden, fawn, white, cream, yellow, black and tan, red and tricolor (white, tan and brown). 

This breed is a low shedder and almost has no doggie any smell. Therefore, Saluki’s coat is easy to maintain. It is necessary to occasionally comb the hair, paying particular attention to feathered areas. Also, be sure to monitor the cleanliness of the dog’s ears. Salukis are very fussy when it comes to their eating habits, and they prefer to eat small portions. However, you should contact your veterinarian if the dog does not eat more than two days.

Health Problems:

The Saluki is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to bloating, hip dysplasia, cataracts, skin diseases, cancer and cardiomyopathy. The Saluki has a life expectancy of 10 to 17 years.

Weight / Height:

The male Saluki dog breed’s height is around 25 – 28 inches and weighs around 50 and 65 pounds. Female Saluki dogs can reach a size from 23 – 26 inches and weighs between 40 and 65 pounds.

Training:

Make sure to train and socialize the Saluki at an early age. He quickly learns but prefers short and varied training sessions over dull repetition. This dog does not tolerate rigid discipline. Actually, the Saluki needs kindness, love and understanding.

Activity:

By nature, the Saluki is athletic and highly energetic. This dog needs intense exercise, and therefore is not suitable for living in a city apartment. Open space is essential for Salukis and their proper development. The yard must be surrounded by a high and strong wall, and the dog should be on a short leash when hiking. While running, this breed is capable of developing the speed of 50 mph.
