Standard Schnauzer

Description

Bred in Germany, the Standard Schnauzer is the oldest schnauzers type. Although this breed was initially created for the protection of animals, the Schnauzer is now more popular as a watchdog and family companion. Indeed, Standard Schnauzers are wonderful with children and can be fully trusted. The Standard Schnauzer was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904.

Character

The Standard Schnauzer is a very thriving and intelligent dog. He is extremely loyal, affectionate, playful and charming. Standard Schnauzers get along well with teenagers. However, they can be quite aggressive with small pets. The Schnauzer needs constant human attention, otherwise, he will become frustrated and unbearable. This dog is very cautious with strangers and always ready to defend his family, which makes him a great guard. These schnauzers are not recommended for novice and inactive dog breeders.

Coat / Care

The Standard Schnauzer has a two-layered coat. The top layer is rough and hard while the undercoat is soft and dense. The facial hair forms a long beard and bushy eyebrows. Standard Schnauzers can be pure black, but more common color is pepper and salt. Even though this breed sheds moderately, it requires daily combing with a stiff brush, in order to prevent tangling of the hair. Particular attention should be paid to the hair around the eyes, ears and whiskers (especially after eating). At least twice a year, the Schnauzer should undergo professional trimming procedure. Bathe your dog only when necessary, or simply use a dry shampoo.

Health Problems

The Schnauzer dogs are considered to be quite healthy. However, the two major health issues are hereditary eye disease and hip dysplasia. The Standard Schnauzer has a life expectancy of 13 to 16 years.

Weight / Height

The male Standard Schnauzer dog breed’s height is around 18.5 – 19.5 inches and weighs around 35 and 50 pounds. Female Standard Schnauzer dogs can reach a size from 17.5 – 18.5 inches and weighs between 30 and 40 pounds.

Training

Demanding and stubborn, the Standard Schnauzer needs a strong and dominant owner. Therefore, he requires early socialization and obedience training at a young age. Standard Schnauzers need rigorous, intense and consistent training. These dogs are often used for search and rescue, in military service, and they are known for their high achievements in various dog sports. Moreover, Standard Schnauzers are often involved in psychological therapy.

Activity

Since the Standard Schnauzer is very energetic, he needs a continuous, active training. He likes to play, to walk on a leash with his owner or run freely in the spacious yard. Hence, theSchnauzer will always find something fun to do. This breed can bear living in a city apartment, if it exercises enough.
