SWEDISH VALLHUND DOG BREED

Description:

Swedish Vallhunds were bred for the purpose of herding and driving (driving is the practice of moving livestock over long distances) the cattle. Therefore, this dog is also known as the “Swedish Cattle Dog”. The Swedish Vallhund has a good sense of humor and brings the fun and excitement in the lives of his owners. This breed has a strong protective instinct, which makes it particularly wary of strangers. The Swedish Vallhund is a calm and affectionate dog that is constantly in need of attention on the part of the owners. This a very rare breed that almost went extinct, but was successfully saved in the 1940s.

Characteristics:

The Swedish Vallhund is a small dog with long, strong body and erect ears. Vallhunds are very smart and energetic, and they will bark to warn the owners of possible danger. The Comparable Breed: Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

Character:

Swedish Vallhunds are temperamental, affectionate and playful little dogs. They can get along well with children if properly socialized while still puppies. The Swedish Vallhund can also experience difficulties in communication with small pets and definitely cannot tolerate cats.

Coat / Care:

The Swedish Vallhund has a dense, harsh overcoat with a soft, thick, silky undercoat. The hair on his erect ears a little are lighter than in other parts of the body. Shedding is moderate. The Vallhund does not require special care. It will be sufficient to comb your pet once a month. Bathing is not recommended, it is better to wipe the dog with a dry towel or to use a dry shampoo.

Health Problems:

The Swedish Vallhund is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Retinopathy (Eye disease). The Swedish Vallhund has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Weight / Height

The male Swedish Vallhund dog breed’s height is around 12.5 – 13.5 inches and weighs around 25 and 35 pounds. Female Swedish Vallhund dogs can reach a size from 11.5 – 12.5 inches and weighs between 20 and 30 pounds.

Training:

The Swedish Vallhund is quite smart, learns with ease and can be very obedient. Make sure to treat your Vallhund politely and gently. This is a wonderful companion dog and can be a good watchdog if trained adequately.

Activity:

If they exercise enough, The Swedish Vallhunds can thrive in a city apartment. Since this breed is highly energetic, it can be pretty irritable if it’s not mentally and physically stimulated.
