AMERICAN WATER SPANIEL
Description:
The American Water Spaniel (often abbreviated to AWS) is one of the few breeds bred in America, in fact, the American Water Spaniel is very little known outside the United States. Since the 18th century, these dogs were used on farms, as well as for the purpose of hunting, especially in Minnesota and Wisconsin. In 1986, the dogs of this breed were officially recognized as a symbol of the State of Wisconsin. The American Water Spaniel was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1940.

Characteristics:
The American Water Spaniel is a dog of medium size. These dogs are excellent and passionate hunters. They are intelligent, friendly, and very eager to please, and they simply radiate enthusiasm. Character:
The American Water Spaniel is very friendly, energetic, obedient, and loyal dog. These animals are gentle toward children and other pets, although they can be aggressive with dogs they do not know. The American Water Spaniel is the perfect pet and an excellent watchdog, though some may find that it barks too much. As a rule, the AWS is especially tied to one person in the family. These dogs love the attention, but it is able to entertain themselves.
Coat / Care:
The American Water Spaniel is covered with two layers of coat. The outer cover varies from dense to wavy curl, while a dense undercoat protects this breed from water and any bad weather. The coat is neither coarse nor soft, but slightly oily, with a liver, brown, or chocolate color. Shedding is weak, but the American Water Spaniel should be thoroughly cleaned at least twice a week. Bathe your dog only in case of urgent need, using a mild shampoo. It is important that the coat is not deprived of natural fat. A dog of this breed requires professional grooming, otherwise, it will not look neat.
Health Problems:
The American Water Spaniel is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Eye Issues including Cataracts and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Hip Dysplasia, Hypothyroidism, Pattern Baldness (Saddle Alopecia), Additional Concerns, Allergies, Epilepsy, Diabetes, and Hair Loss. The American Water Spaniel generally lives for 10 to 14 years.
Weight / Height
The male American Water Spaniel dog breed’s height is around 16 – 18 inches and weighs around 30 and 45 pounds. Female American Water Spaniel dogs can reach a size from 15 – 17 inches and weighs between 25 and 40 pounds. Male dogs are generally larger than females.
Training:
The American Water Spaniel grows rather slowly and only upon reaching the age of two is able to start with the training program. The AWS is quite difficult to tame, so it is recommended to keep it in a special box. Dogs of this breed have a sensitive nature and do not respond to harsh or rigid training methods. It is important to treat them with love, respect, to be patient and fair.
Activity:
The American Water Spaniels requires a significant amount of exercise, such as daily jogging and long walks. The AWS loves swimming, hunting and it gets so ecstatic from all sorts of outdoor activities. The American Water Spaniel is suitable for a rural house with a fenced yard, where it can run freely, but it can also live in an apartment, provided that it gets enough training.
