Description:

This Australian Kelpie was developed in Australia in the 1870s. The Australian Kelpie is a dog known for its natural instincts of defending and herding, which copes equally well with poultry, livestock and reindeer. The Australian Kelpie is the most popular herding dog, not only at home but also in many other countries.

Characteristics:

This breed has an excellent intuition and the ability to always be on guard. The Australian Kelpie is extremely agile; it seems that he has an inexhaustible source of energy. Dogs of this breed are considered to be the best of the medium dogs. Despite its compact size and muscular body, this is a really versatile dog with unlimited abilities.

Character:

The Australian Kelpie is a faithful companion. He is moderately quiet in the house and very active during operation. A dog of this breed, as a rule, chooses only one master to form eternal bond. These dogs are extremely loyal to their owner, and they are true companions. Australian Kelpies get on well with children, but, they don`t get along with other dogs and pets, unless they are not brought up in the same house. The Australian Kelpie is not aggressive, but will protect and defend his family and territory no matter how great the danger is.

Coat / Care:

Australian Kelpie is covered with two layers of wool. The outer layer is straight and hard, perfect protection against all weather conditions. The inner layer is tight and short. Shedding is of medium intensity. A dog of this breed should be cleaned regularly and bathed only when it is really necessary, in order to protect the skin and the coat from heavy pollution. It is important to carefully follow the dental hygiene.

Health Problems:

The Australian Kelpie is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and Cerebellar Abiotrophy. The Australian Kelpie has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Weight / Height

The male Australian Kelpie dog breed’s height is around 19 – 20 inches and weighs around 35 and 45 pounds. Female Australian Kelpie dogs can reach a size from 17 – 19 inches and weighs between 25 and 40 pounds.

Training:

The Australian Kelpie is an independent and very smart dog. Early socialization is recommended. Dogs of this breed do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods, so the training should be carried out with the necessary perseverance, fairness and consistency.

Activity:

Australian Kelpies are not suitable for keeping in a city apartment, as they prefer the countryside with vivid ambiance. If this dog is bored, it can cause significant damage to the environment.
