AKBASH DOG BREED

Description:

The Akbash Dog is a very rare and elegant breed that appeared in Western Turkey three thousand years ago. In the US, this breed has appeared in the 1970s and was officially recognized in 1998. The Akbash Dog is one of the national dog breeds of Turkey.

Characteristics:

The Akbash Dog is a large breed but tends to be leaner than other Turkish livestock guardian dog breeds. They are good hunters and defenders, and they will not be intimidated by the size and power of the enemy. The Akbash personality tends to be calm, aware and proud. Comparable Breed: Great Pyrenees, Komondor.

Character:

The Akbash is not suited for people with no experience since it requires great attention and special care. Akbash Dogs are very attentive to the family members, especially children, and they also get along well with other pets. Nevertheless, Akbash reacts very aggressively to other dogs on their territory. By nature, this breed is loyal, affectionate, gentle, and at the same time, independent. The Akbash Dog is a perfect guardian.

Coat / Care:

The Akbash has a smooth-short to medium-full white double coat. The hair can be curly and wavy, especially on the hips, legs and tail. The coat does not protect the dog from harsh weather. You should bathe your dog only when necessary, by using a mild or dry shampoo.

Health Problems:

The Akbash Dog is generally healthy dog breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to various infectious diseases and conditions to varying degrees. Akbash Dogs, like many large breeds, can be expected to live 10 to 12 years on average.

Weight / Height

The male Akbash dog breed’s height is around 30 – 34 inches and weighs around 100 and 120 pounds. Female Akbash dogs can reach a size from 27 – 31 inches and weighs between 90 and 105 pounds. Male dogs are generally larger than females.

Training:

The Akbash Dog is a good companion, but it requires early and intensive training. This breed has an independent, individual character, but it is very dependent on its environment. The Akbash Dog responds well to training if it is carried out thoroughly and with constant repetitions.

Activity:

The Akbash Dog is absolutely not suitable for living in the apartment, the natural environment for these dogs is fenced yard or a rural area. Walking is their favorite activity.
