Bred in the southern United States of America, the Black Mouth Cur was originally intended to be a universal service dog. These dogs are highly valued for their many talents. Hence, these dogs are hunters, herders, search and rescue dogs, watchdogs. Although the Black Mouth Cur is primarily a working breed, he can be a great companion and devoted friend.

The Black Mouth Cur is a well-balanced, robust and courageous dog. Sturdily built, fast and tenacious, the Black Mouth Cur almost never gets tired. This breed is genetically very athletic, agile and eager to please its master. Comparable Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog and Black and Tan Coonhound.


Black Mouth Curs are loyal, active and smart. Since these dogs have a very strong shepherd instinct, it is best if they spend time with older children in the house. The Black Mouth Cur quickly find a common language with other dogs but cannot bear cats. Black Mouth Cur love being around people, but they are quite careful around strangers. This amazing breed is always alert and ready to protect its family and territory.

Coat / Care:

The coat is short, straight, smooth and pleasant to the touch. Dogs of this breed do not shed so the maintenance is relatively easy. It is enough to occasionally clean your pet with a stiff brush. Bathe the Cur only when it is really necessary. In order to prevent drying of the skin, make sure you use a mild shampoo. It is important to regularly check on the dog’s ears, clean them and remove the excess hair. In addition, regular claws trimming is a must. There is no specific information in terms of typical health concerns.


The Black Mouth Cur is an extremely intelligent dog, though very sensitive. Early socialization and training course are recommended for proper development of the dog. Black Mouth Curs will not tolerate too rude or oppressive education methods. In fact, activities should be conducted with fairness, consistency and respect, and the lessons should be short and varied in order to keep the dog’s attention.


The Black Mouth Cur is not recommended for living a city apartment. Since this is a hunting breed, it needs a significant amount of mental and physical activity. This dog breed thrives in the house with spacious and well-fenced yard.
